I've not got any of them. Well, actually, I think I've got Settlers III somewhere, but I've not got a clue exactly where it is.

I only got "the settlers 2 10th anniversary edition"
best game in the series for me
though I have not played it since acquiring my widescreen because the vert- really impairs the total view of the field

just got a shot at looking through files
and it seems there's a few xml files in a "settings" folder but unfortunately they are encrypted...
so unless someone knows how to decrypt them .... no luck here

I messed around with the Settlers IV demo and I may have come up with a solution. If you'd test it out for me with the full game I'd appreciate it.

To add widescreen support to this game you'll need a hex editor such as Be.HexEditor. Open your gfxengine.dll file (located in the Settlers IVExe directory) with the editor and search for the following string:

00 05 00 00 bb 00 04 00 00




00 04 and 00 03 represent the resolution 1024x768. Change it to whatever resolution you need.

1024x600 - Replace 00 04 with 00 04 and replace 00 03 with 58 02
1280x720 - Replace 00 04 with 00 05 and replace 00 03 with D0 02
1280x800 - Replace 00 04 with 00 05 and replace 00 03 with 20 03
1366x768 - Replace 00 04 with 56 05 and replace 00 03 with 00 03
1440x900 - Replace 00 04 with A0 05 and replace 00 03 with 84 03
1680x1050 - Replace 00 04 with 90 06 and replace 00 03 with 1A 04
1920x1080 - Replace 00 04 with 80 07 and replace 00 03 with 38 04
1920x1200 - Replace 00 04 with 80 07 and replace 00 03 with B0 04

Save the file and change your in-game resolution to 1024x768.

I've tested it in 1280x720 and 1280x768 and it seemed to work fine. It's pixel based, so the higher the resolution, the more game area is rendered.

Unfortunately the HUD also seems to be pixel based, so the smaller the vertical resolution, the less of the HUD you'll see. The HUD is designed around 1024x768, with 800x600 having one section cut off, and 1280x1024 having an empty section tacked on. So as long as your vertical resolution is 768 or higher, you should see it all. If your vertical resolution is higher than 1024, though, it may do something funky with it, so let me know. If it's between 600 and 768 (like 1280x720 for example) it cuts off part of the bottom section.

I'll look at the Settlers 3 demo later. I had a copy of Caesar II but I can't seem to find it. I sure hope I didn't toss it out.

I tested it in 1440x900 and it works as well, though that computer is newer and the message boxes are sometimes black (but that happens with the normal resolutions as well so it's probably not an issue with the fix).

I can confirm that this works for 1920x1080 apart from a small bug in the extra space under the panel. Other than that it works great.

It doesn't work for me. My native resolution is 1440 x 900, but when I change to that I can only see the cruisor changing between the resolutions over a black background untill i terminate the game. The only widescreen resolution working is 1280 x 720, and that's to narrow for my screen. I've tried with other resolutions at that ratio (1440 x 810) but that doesn't work either.

I have a GeForce 9600M GT card and Vista 32 bit, and compablilty modes doesn't resolve the issue. Could it perhaps be related to the black box problem?

It would be really nice if someone could give me some tips!

I've managed to run The Settlers III Gold Edition (lang. Polish, version 1.60) under 1680x1050 resolution. Unfortunately it doesn't look great.

Repro steps:
1. Open s3.exe in any hex editor.

2. Find one of hex values:
2.1. "E0010000688002" for 640x480
2.2. "58020000682003" for 800x600
2.3. "00030000680004" for 1024x768

3. Replace found bytes with one of the following hex values:
3.1. "58020000680004" for 1024x600 (works)
3.2. "D0020000680005" for 1280x720 (direct draw error)
3.3. "20030000680005" for 1280x800 (works)
3.4. "00030000685605" for 1366x768 (direct draw error)
3.5. "8403000068A005" for 1440x900 (works)
3.6. "1A04000068A005" for 1440x1050 (direct draw error)
3.7. "1A040000689006" for 1680x1050 (works)
3.8. "38040000688007" for 1920x1080 (not tested)
3.9. "B0040000688007" for 1920x1200 (not tested)

4. Run SETUPS3.EXE, choose resolution you've modified and play the game.

You can move cursor over black area. You can select an unit and right-click somewhere in black area and it will follow (of course if you didn't right-click the water).

I've had a short look at Caesar 2. Unfortunately, I can't find anything obvious enough to change the resolution. Seems hardcoded into the game.

Had the problem running Vista x64. I wasn't able to change resolution ingame, all buttons were grayed out.

After a lot of mucking about this is what fixed the problem for me:
1. Open the file 'Settlers IVConfigGameSettings.cfg' (use notepad)
2a. For 1280x1024 resolution set the following value's


Screenmode = 3
WindowHeight = 1024
WindowWidth = 1280



2b. For 1024x786


Screenmode = 2
WindowHeight = 786
WindowWidth = 1024



3. Save the file & Start the game

Its the screenmode line thats hard to figure out.

I tried pretty much everything here: compatibility modes, the above mentioned hex hax (even to change the 800x600 resolution to 1024x768), config changes... nothing

I tried it on my PC (win7x64, ATI graphics) and my laptop (win7x64, nvidia) bot are 1440x900 and I was only able to change the resolution as far as Settlers allowed my to (ingame settings). On my PC that means: 800x600 (not at all) and my laptop 1024x768...

Guess one can't do anything about that... the game is just too old for this :(
