You want to know why ?
Simply because 80% of PC users are retards, and if they think that they need to buy new hardware for playing this game they will, and some will look at the readme, see that they need at least 1GB of VRAM to run it, then they go to the store and buy a 900$ GTX285 to put in their Celeron 2ghz system with 512mb of ddr-266....
You dont have to look far, the reason for EVERYTHING the gaming industry does, it's for PROFIT !!!
We seriously need a Non-Profit Gaming Organization...

Yeah when you put it that way it's pretty much true, just look at gta 4 it pretty much got hyped thanks to the limit. Yet still it at least had a lovely .ini
This feels like another console to pc port, perhaps it is.

It runs and looks great. But ya, it's still a little console-y. The HUD elements are pretty far from the edge to allow for 4:3 TV frames and there's little to do about changing controller layouts. Still, the HUD isn't too large and not too far from the edge, and the controller thing was an easy fix.
What I'd like to see is a way to change the FOV to pull the camera out a little bit. Ya, I'm still pretty happy with it.

I like it too, the graphics aint that good but that's not what makes a good game anyway, and to be honest, my first 5min of playing time got me hooked, if only i could play it native @ 1920x1080 or at least 1600x1200...
1024x768 gives me sumo fighters all over the screen... people are like way fatter than they sould :p

prototypeenginef.dll HEX edit
offset 0x01075BC8 80020000E0010000
2 uint32's 640 and 480, change to desired resolution
first go ingame choose 640x480 as your resolution, exit then edit the dll to your resolution, start the game
i did almost the same thing but i edited 1680 and 1050 which is at 0x01075C20 but not everyone will be able to choose this res so edit the 640x480 one
to get everything back to normal youll have to restore the dll and probably rename/delete profile.bin in "my documents/prototype"

Please some one explain this in more detail. What program is used to open and edit the dll? How exactly does one go about editing the dll?
Sorry for the noob questions, but I really want to play this game in my native resolution.
Thanks in advance!

take a look at this guide if you are stuck, its similar but we'll be editing 640x480 instead of 800x600
http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/node/10641
its not a string, its 2 dword numbers, so just use GoTo/Jump To feature and paste the dll offset 0x01075BC8.
you should see 80020000E0010000 in the hex data
8002 = 640
E001 = 480
uploading the file for others may not be a great idea.. its part of the original game so youre violating some agreement if you did

After doing that, and changing it to 1440x900, 640x480 (Or whatever resolution I edit) becomes inaccessible in the ingame options, and it does not even attempt to run at 1440x900. I have edited it properly by the way...
Perhaps a better solution would be fooling the game into thinking that you're using a card with 512+ vRAM?
Edit: Ugh, I see what's going on. The people trying to change their resolutions to the locked-out resolutions are having problems because the game is still locking those resolutions out; You still won't be able to use them. Like I said, so far the only solution I can foresee is fooling the game.

Mmm dont think so as Racer_S run the game at 5040x1050.

That's because that resolution isn't locked out by the game because of insufficient vRAM. That method still works fine for completely custom resolutions that were never included in the game in the first place.
The readme -
Cards with less than 1024 MB cannot access resolutions with widths of greater than 1600 or heights of 1080. This means with a card of LESS THAN 1024MB VRAM has these available:
The following are only available for cards with 512MB VRAM or more:
1280 x 1024
1440 x 900
1600 x 1200
1680 x 1050
1920 x 1080
1920 x 1200
2048 x 1152
2048 x 1536
2560 x 1600
Prototype
So basicly , this works only for custom resolutions?
I tried to change 640x480 and 800x600 to 1440x900 , game loads as 1280x800 and i lost the in game resolutions i had edited.
Would 1440x899 work? lol
Hang on I'll go try that... lol
Edit: No...
Same thing
I change Resolution with Hex editor and its always 1280 x 800
