I need an external DVD drive for my new laptop. I'm not willing to spend $70 for one...it just seems rediculous.

Anyone have a solution thats around $30 new? or heck, I'd go used too.

I don't think you'll get one for less than $50.

Your best bet is just footing the bill or maybe take an old dvd drive and get a 5.25" external enclosure.

For a laptop I'd suggest the Samsung SE-S084. It's freaking tiny and does;t need external power to run, jsut two usb ports. Though it can run on a single usb. I foudn oen for a friend for about $75 CAD. That was the cheapeswt i could find it in Canada. (got it price matech from Futureshop's $130.

It's fairly fast and quiet. Not quite as fast as a large external with a external power supply, but for the trade-off, i think it's quite worth it.

Enclosures are good too, since you can slam a HDD in there if you need to.

I've been considering the SE-S084B but couldn't find a good picture of it, is it the tray/free-roaming disc kind or the laptop, stick disc on pike kind?

Tray. I think there's a slot version as well, but I could not find one locally.

No, not tray vs slot,

What I mean is, is it the laptop style tray, also like the ps2slim, where you have to stick the disc on the spinner part, not just drop it in a tray free-roaming, like most desktop 5 1/4 inch drives are.

I'm asking because I already have an external dvd reader with the desktop style, and it sometimes gets a bit loud. I'm looking for an external dvd drive, hopefully usb powered, that also has the laptop style tray to make it quieter.

Basically, I'm looking for one with a tray without the hole.
