I can say now that this game is worth neither a download nor a purchase. It is a contender in the Top 5 buggiest ports I have ever seen. Add on to that the LOL-BLOATWARE that is SecuRom, Rockstar Social Club, Games for Windows Live, Steam if you buy it from there...I mean come on.

I won't buy or pirate this title, it is that bad. It's just not worth it, and to top it all off it is another Crysis, most of its settings are designed for computers that don't exist yet and the engine is unoptimized.

Rockstar, you definitely win alright...

Heh I feel the exact same way, Im not even planning on pirating this one. And considering 2-3 weeks ago I was actually planning on buying it...

Just got an email from a buddy, who is a die-hard GTA fan, saying that he is passing on GTA IV. SecuROM, bloatware, CTDs, etc., plus the fact that his fairly decent rig likely won't be able to sustain playable framerates. This particular friend is very forgiving when it comes to DRM and crapware, and GTA is one of his all-time favorite series, so I was surprised (and not) that he's passing on IV (which he has been anticipating for years).

Conspiracy theory:
I wonder if Sony is happy about the negativity surrounding SecuROM (which it owns) and its effect on PC gaming, namely, that it is likely some gamers are switching to consoles because of teh hated DRM. PS3 sales, anyone?

I've got no evidence, but it wouldn't surprise me either. Sony is well known as a frequently hostile company (to consumers or companies), and they certainly like things "their way". From non-standard audio jacks to mini-disc to Betamax to ARcoSS to BD+ to who knows how much litigation and lobbying...yeah, I bet they won't shed any tears if people jump to the PS3.

Steps to play muiltiplayer:

1. Load Rockstar Games Social Club Tray App
2. Load Steam, if applicable
3. Load Grand Theft Auto IV
4. Log in to Games For Windows LIVE, if auto-login disabled
5. Press Start
6. Wait for game to begin
7. Press Up Arrow
8. Scroll through in-game phone menu to 'Multiplayer'
9. Hit Enter
10. Select 'LIVE'
11. Hit Enter
12. Select 'Quick Match', 'Custom Match', or create a new game
13. If 'Quick Match' dumped you in a match setup lobby, leave and begin process again
14. Select 'Custom Match'
15. Wait for the piss-poor server browser (putting it kindly) to populate
16. Enter game
17. Play
18. Match ends, all dumped back to the lobby, game cannot continue indefinitely
19. All match settings reset
20. If host, re-enter thirty preferences
21. If player, wait for host to re-enter thirty preferences
22. Play
23. To exit, mess with in-game mobile phone, or hit Escape and select 'Leave' from the 'Game' Menu
24. Now in Single Player once more
25. To exit to desktop, select 'Quit' from the 'Game' Menu

Thank you kindly DaFox!
So the access is through the guy's phone; I could never have guessed it, and it's not really in the manual. Or is it? It's chocfull of trivia and cheesy lines and perhaps this important bit of information is buried there somewhere.
Anyways, thanks again!

This is getting better and better. I cannot play the game online because I am unable to sign in to windows live application! I checked gfwl forum and turns out I am not alone, but there is no solution. I did forward or open the necessary ports in my firewall and router, and I am running out of ideas. Anybody here has a similar problem? I have got 5 more days to return the game to the store, and it looks like I will finally take advantage of this option.

I don't plan on pirating this either. Ironically enough I feel that GTA has moved away from fun to realistic...which is not why I ever played it.

So my opinion on GTA 4 is leave it. I will probably never play it for the pc or 360...
