Nice that you got it working. I attempted the same thing and failed.
My motherboard doesn't have a 3rd pci-e x16 slot so I got a pci-e x16 8400gs with a low profile bracket and a pci-e x1 -> x16 adapter from startech. Not only does it not fit with even with the low profile bracket (it's offset by an inch or so), the card won't even function in the slot/adapter. I know the card's good since removing my 8800 and putting it in a regular x16 slot it works fine.
Maybe the adapter is defective but I can't see how that would happen since it's not an active component and I've generally had good luck with startech items cables and adapters.
Anyone know a pci-e x1 video card that's fanless and single slot?
