Maybe my retro feelings just aren't clouding my judgment enough to bite but I don't consider those old games worth 6$ a piece.

One of these games costs about as much as a large drink at Starbucks. I'm sure they provide at least as much "satisfaction" as the one drink.

I'm planning on getting Freespace 1&2 with the buy one get one free deal. I actually already have these games, but I got them again just for the convenience of not having to use CDs (I could never figure out how to run them without the CDs and still have the cut-scenes).

My take on what's available:

Fallout 1&2 are absolute must-owns. Period. There are a handful of games, not many at all, that I would go as far as to say that you haven't ever played them, you suck. Fallout 1&2 are the only games the site sells that I would say this about.

Freespace 1&2 are must-owns if you're into space sims. But seeing as there aren't a whole lot of decent space sims out there, if you are into space sims you probably already have these.

Fallout Tactics is for people who really liked the combat mechanics of Fallout 1&2 and want a side game built entirely around the combat mechanics with decreased emphasis on roleplaying. It's excellent if that's what your looking for, but not so good if it isn't.

Operation Flashpoint is arguably the best "realistic" military shooter out there, though this is admittedly a niche genre.

Descent 1&2, Giants: Citizen Kabuto, and MDK are all worthy additions to anyone's game collection.

MDK2, Redneck Rampage, Sacrifice, and Shogo are a notch below the above three in quality, but still well worth the six bucks.

Stonekeep is a decent RPG that came out during the awkward time after Ultima VII and before Baldur's Gate when computer RPGs were scarce. If you're an RPG freak and you've played both Fallouts, both Baldur's Gates, all the Wizardrys and Ultimas, Wasteland, The Bard's Tale, etc., then I recommend you play this too. If not, I recommend playing any of the RPGs in the previous sentence.

Jagged Alliance 2 is a great tactical strategy game. Unfortunately, that's not what they're selling. Instead they offer the standalone expansion Jagged Alliance 2: Unfinished Business, which is a lousy introduction to the game, and besides that is kind of dull and repetitive.

Everything else they offer is IMO rather unremarkable.

Thanks for the overall assessment, Cranky.

Based on the quote above, I must confess that I suck  . Will try to redeem my gamer status pronto. ;) (skulks off to find wallet...)

If you buy Fallout, watch out for the rats, they are total bastards

If you can't handle the rats, you screwed up during character creation. Better to find that out in the first 20 minutes than to spend hours in a "safe" starting area only to later get slaughtered in the first "real" encounter.

More good news.

I purchased Sacrifice (which I have on disc) from the GOG site but discovered after buying that it still suffered from a pagefile error related to systems with more than 2GB of RAM. They had a support article explaining that reducing the pagefile to 512MB would prevent the error (which it did), but I wrote them anyway to say I was a little disappointed with their "100% XP and Vista compatibility claims".

Customer service wins on this one for sure. They fixed the game's code and released a new installer: no pagefile error!

I've emailed them to report on how pleased I am with their service...and I threw in a little bid for better widescreen support. ;) I included this article as persuasion:
90% widescreen by 2011

A Will Ferrell quote is appropriate here:
"Good times...good times."

I just got giants:citizen kabuto, sacrifice, messiah and mdk2 from em.

I may not even have time to play em but I consider this my vote that it's the right way to treat drm, remove it.

/agree

2 thumbs up!

Amen!

GOG is going to dominate most of my game shopping for the next few months, and this is certainly one of the reasons. EA take note, I'm going to go out of my way to spend my cash at GOG, because they sell awesome products and do everything they can to make me a happy customer.

Novel business model, huh?

I'm hoping they expand the titles quite bit, those 4 were the only ones I considered worth getting. I already have the fallouts from buying a 1 cd trio bundle of em some time back.
