Video card that will work well with FSX and TH2G?

Post by shadown7 »

Hello everyone,

I'm currently building my own PC for FSX. I want to purchase the TH2G to use the 3072X1024 view for FSX.

What single SLI video card would you recommend so I won't have a huge hit in frame rates. I'm told that having more than one video cards in SLI mode does not increase the performance of FSX due to the game was not made to use it the way it should. I also was recommended to get a powerful single card.

Thanks in advance for your help!

9600s are still pretty beefy, the GTX200s aren't much more than just a DirectX 10.1 patch on the 9xxx hardware from what I can tell. Pretty much the same as the 9xxx series, just only the high ends (96/9800) with 10.1 support. FSX should only be using DX10 so you'll be fine with a good 9600 or 9800 AFAIK. If anyone else has any information to direct otherwise, I beg that you come forward, and stop me from shoving my foot in my mouth.
Current build: Intel i5-4670k | 32GB DDR3 | RAID0 2x250GB 850EVOs | nVidia GTX980Ti (MSI G1 Gaming Edition) | SoundBlaster Zx | Dell 2405FPW (Landscape, primary) & HP w2338h (Portrait)

Are you going to use triple 17" monitors? Based on my PC specs below, and set all the settings to ultra high with AA, light bloom, Anisotropic filtering, no DX 10 preview, I would generally get smooth framerates. Busy airports is such a huge performance hit. Even when I lower the graphics settings in fsx, frames still slow down at heavy airports. So I guess you need both a good CPU + GPU to run FSX well.

Personally, I recommend NVIDIA. They have supported "aspect scaling" forever, and are the only way to get the upper limits in TH2Go. That being said, they are a sponsor of the WSGF, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. Although, the fact remains that only NV cards can do 3x1680x1050.

And, that brings me to another question. With the recent BIOS update to the DTH2Go, is there a reason you're not looking at 3x1680x1050?

You can read my review of the 9800GX2. It seems to outperform the G2xx series in most cases, but there may be more headroom in future games for G2xx in SLI.

There still aren't ANY Nvidia cards that support DX 10.1, so no, they can't be a "10.1 Patch" for the 9xxx hardware.

The bandwidth of high end NVidia cards is great for triplehead setups. Of course, the 2GB 4870X2 might just be the new champion if it works well with TH2GO.

Foot successfully shoved in mouth. Thanks for being harsh about it.

From the tone of your previous post, it seemed as if you yearned for it to be rough.

I'm really torn between ATi and nVidia at the minute, to be honest. I've just experienced some new hate of ATi drivers, but not long before that I had had a struggle with some nVidia ones. So it's kind of six of one, half a dozen of the other.

But for TripleHead, I think I'd probably end up going nVidia.

I'm tempted to step my 8800GT up to a GTX260, as it'll cost me less than £100 to do so given their prices right now.
