thanks for the input guys, i decided to go for the WD Scorpio Blue 320GB HDD, 5400rpm, 8mb cache.
the PS3 loads faster with a 16mb cache, but i heard the difference is minimal, so no big deal, and i wan tot avoid the heat since most 16mb cache drives are 7200rpm.
320GB is a massive improvement compared to my current 60GB stick PS3 drive.
thanks again.
do they make 2.5" HDD with 5400rpm and 16mb cache?

I don't know how PS3 things work, but, can you plug in external hard drives to it?

Yes I believe you can via the USB ports. I'm not sure if they are recognized natively though. I only know this because I've heard rumblings about people playing fully ripped backups of their games off of the internal hard drive or and external one over the USB port.

I've tried playing video's off an external HDD via USB and it worked, but the PS3 can't boot or save games and cache data to an external disk.
