I can check the Nvidia 7800GT with VGA via dongle this weekend if you haven't already and when my soon to be ATI 4870X2 arrives, I can retest it then with scaling

Hi Tamlin, any news?

Hi! Yes.

I've tested the screen via VGA on the new card and my laptop as well (intel). All of them gives 640x480 through VGA. The 4870X2 gives 1280x1024 through DVI with scaling options working, while the 7800GT scales to full screen regardless. Forgot to try VGA through dongle, but I think it would give 640x480 as intel GMA and ATI. :)

Therefore, if I buy an ATi card, do you think I could rescale text-mode resolutions without restrictions on both connections, DVI and VGA?

I'm not a hardcore gamer but I want a graphics card prepared for the future (Windows Vista & 7). May be a 4850 a good option?

Thanks again ;)

You'll get 1280x1024 as minimum through DVI scalable upwards only and 640x480 through vga scaling upwards. :)

4850 would be a good option, but buy the 1 gb variant for higher resolutions memory. You'll get DX10.1, which will be supported natively in the new windows 7 desktop manager and ATI stream have added support for Adobe CS4 and more through drivers, including Vista applications running DX (like the photo viewer in Vista) for GPGPU.

As for Linux, there will be more support as well. 2008 have been a good year for Linux support on ATI, a place where Nvidia traditionally have been better. The 9.1 beta drivers (RC2) is leaked already for linux and gives additionally features (its still beta and buggy, so wait for the release).

Hello!

I'm almost convinced that the purchase of an ATi card. Is the assembler important? Your graphics card is assembled by Gainward, isn't it?

What do you think about Sapphire and ASUS cards? Do you have any recommendation for me?

Thanks a lot!! :)

Personally, my preferences is based upon the hardware itself. I bought Gainward because I wanted a non-reference cooler on the card. With a non-reference cooler, I can lower the fan more in 2D and still have the temps ok in my cabinet (I like silent computing).

Often with assemblers, its basically the same card, so I would go after following:

Best return options (no matter how much you pay, there is no warranty for everything to work, so get good warranty in case it doesn't).

Non-reference cooler, since heat control and silence is important if you work with the computer much. Gives you more peace of mind and more stable computer.

If you are stuck between two after the above, go for the best bundle. :)

Thanks for your invaluable help.

In the other hand I've a strange issue with my current 6600GT and the 2690WUXi. If I set the ECO MODE option to ON, the next time I turn on the monitor it only achieves 1280x720 as maximum resolution. In order to get the native resolution, I have to recall the factory defaults.

I'm worried about this. I don't know if it's a fault of the graphics card or the monitor or both... Can you tell me something about this? Can you test this mode with your old 7800GT?

Thanks in advance :(

PS: Happy christmas :)

Putting in the 7800 card would be too much work and I'd rather avoid it if I can. It means I have to remove drivers for the 4870x2, install the new card, install drivers, test it, uninstall drivers, remove the card, install the 4870x2 and install drivers for it. :P All those restarts and unpluggings...

I tested ECO Mode on 1, 2 and custom and there were no issues.

That you are getting a 1280x720 resolution as maximum might be a result of driver settings. Eco mode shouldn't interfere with the EDID data though.

Nvidia cards have a dynamic edid detection and it might be confused thinking your screen is a HDtv or similar. There has been a lot of bugs with Nvidia and EDID detection. A possible solution would be to turn off edid, but that wouldn't be advisable when you are calibrating your screen with LUT calibration. Another option would be to turn off ddc/ci in the advanced menu, but again you won't be able to calibrate again by LUT.

It works at least with the 4870X2 and would probably work if you are getting the 4850. :)

Merry Christmas to you too! :D

For your information,

BasicColor 4.1.9 and Spectraview Profile 4.1.9 works OK with Windows 7 Beta 1 64 bits, hardware calibration included.

Hi Tamlin:

Sorry for asking help you again... but I have a problem with my 2690 (not related with resolutions this time).

My problem is I see (faint) horizontal waves running from bottom to top under certain conditions: mainly with grey and blue backgrounds and only in the left corner of the screen (in the right corner I've noticed nothing). Curiously, in the left corner is located the monitor power supply (the switch is located there).

Somebody told me the issue could be generated by the quality power. The quality power is good (as far I know). My monitor is using the shipped cables (power and data cables). I've tested the monitor with DVI-I, DVI-D and DSub connections (with shipped cables) and the result is the same, but with DSub connection perhaps these lines are less visible. This annoying effect is more noticeable when brightness is near to 0%.

I have to say too that the monitor was repaired at the Technical Service in France, therefore the unit should be OK and the problem could be my graphics card, my electrical installation or whatever, who knows. What do you think?

It seems the problem is intermittent. I have made some tests more at the morning and I cannot distinguish any waves at all under the gray background even in a dark room. Therefore, I have mailed again to the technical support and they told me is a "electric interference problem. Verify all machines plugged in your house and in your neighbours houses ".

I really think it's not a problem of the monitor itself, but any electrical appliance perhaps (?)

Thanks very much for your help.

PS: If you see suitable, put my post on a new thread since this problem has nothing to do with 2690's calibration.
