How to: Widescreen gaming for beginners

Post by Catweazle »

I've written up an article called Widescreen Gaming which covers the basic concepts involved and describes the procedures/techniques involved with tweaking game installations.

The target audience of the article is the less tech-savvy everyday consumer. There is some detailed explanation provided for people who might struggle a bit with the more technical info provided in FAQs etc on this site.

Feel free to point less experienced newcomers (or people you come across in everyday interaction) in its direction. They'll be pointed back here to WSGF after they've digested the basics, anyway. there are lots of links to here in the article :D

Thanks for the praise :D

I hope it ends up promoted to a wider audience, and can be of assistance to people. Many people really are somewhat naive about widescreen viewing, and it's not restricted to games on the PC.

It's really grating, for example, to walk into so many stores and other businesses and see widescreen monitors display TV or video 4:3 signals which are stretched to fit the screen. Some simple settings adjustments would eliminate the visual offence, but people just don't understand what they are, or even that there's a problem to begin with!

That is a great write up Catweazle! You seem to be able to write techno babble in an easy way so even clowns like me can understand it.

The only bit I would disagree or mention is the first page:

''Our games don't always support the screen resolutions..."

I would comment that this should be:

"Some game developers have remained blind to the market and have failed to see the overwhelming increase in populartiy of widescreen displays. EA for example..."

I hate EA!

I just wanted to thank Catweazel for this article, and for contacting me before he published it. He asked permission to link back, and use some images from the site. That kind of professionalism and community spirit is always appreciated.

I finally got around to adding links to the left nav. Sorry for the delay, but was out of town last week.

Thanks, Ibrin. The link is appreciated, and I hope the venture proves beneficial in both directions.

I'd encourage others, too, to contribute content to this wonderful website or to promote the site elsewhere. Widescreen Gaming Forum is providing a very valuable service to gamers everywhere.

Websites like this one can represent a pretty big investment in time and effort, and return very little (if anything) in the way of payment. I know all too well how much contributions are appreciated.

If any budding writers have non widescreen gaming related content they'd like to try their skills on, of course, and want to try their hand at getting published or honing their skills, Techwrighter will always welcome them. But send the widescreen-related stuff here to WSGF, eh?

:D

JohhnyWakko, your comment makes me smile. You've described exactly the audience I was addressing in the article. It's meant for people from beginner status onward :D

Such as shame. I really enjoyed Catweazle's input. Where has that fellow gone I wonder?

You guys should email him, that is almost the exact same site that popped up on my domain when my registrar decided to be evil. He may not be gone.
