Older games issue - Stretching

Hi! i got my first widescreen monitor a few days ago,but i seem to be having problems making some older games work as i want to.
Well...i'd like to play with the black bars on the sides of the screen, without stretching them into full screen, but even though i've selected the option in my video cards setting "Image Scaling / Use Centered Timings" it does not work. My video card is an ATI Radeon HD 3850 and the monitor is a Samsung 2232BW, if anyone could help me i'd appreciate it much. Thank you in advance.

IIRC, ATI/AMD cards do not support correct aspect scaling, which is what you are looking for.
