Final Fantasy XI: Online Detailed Report

Post by The_cranky_hermit »

Thanks for doing the report. A couple of things need to be changed (the report template follows a "unsupported until proven supported" format).

==Supported resolutions==
This needs to list the following resolutions as either "untested" or "unsupported."
1280x720, 1280x768, 1280x800, 1440x900, 1920x1080, 1920x1200

==Aspect Ratio support==
This section needs screenshots that compare 16:9 with 16:10. I recommend 1600x900 and 1680x1050.

==HUD Stretch==
You need screenshots that demonstrate the HUD scales correctly. The screenshots provided only show that the word "Moogle" stretches, which is indicative of a stretched HUD.

==Cut-scenes==
Can you provide screenshots that show the cut-scenes in 4:3 and 16:10?

==Grading==
It's not certified yet, and unless the HUD is actually scaled correctly, it will get a B+ at max. Also, what you listed under "Minor unresolved issue" is a design flaw unrelated to widescreen, not an "unresolved issue." Here's what the section should look like.

Calculated grade: C+
Potential grade: B+

Major unresolved issues:
Does the game support 1280x720, 1280x768, or 1920x1080?
What does 16:9 look like compared to 16:10?

Minor unresolved issues:
Does the game support 1280x800, 1440x900, and 1920x1200?
What do the cut-scenes look like in 16:10 compared to 4:3?

I have made some of the changes you mentioned. I will get some screenshots this week to demonstrate a few of the categories.

I have noticed that the correct aspect ratios are not supported on the character select screen. It only applies when you are actually in the game world. Most likely a bug that I highly doubt will ever be fixed.

Also, 5:4 aspect ratio is not supported.

I noticed that on the char select screen as well.

EDIT: thanks to The_cranky_hermit for the input and changes. Updates will come in the next couple of days as mentioned for a full report.

I play it at 2048x1280, and have it scale down to 1920x1200... adds an extra appearance of "anti-aliasing."

But both of those resolutions work in FFXI =)

in game cut scenes are hor+
and the game will run any res you can get at in windows if your card/monitor supports it

the game as options to adjust for 16:9 but you have to set it by hand once in the game

the toon select screen is streched in 16:9 and 16:10 since aspect changes do not take effect till you get fully logged in

Can you provide screenshots for those things?
And can you list the widescreen resolutions you have successfully tested?

So I have my resolution set to 1680x1050 in the config utility but when I'm in game it won't let me change it from 4:3, what am I doing wrong?

Finally got myself a proper PC screen without these TV bugs. Since I had decided to stop posting until that issue is cleared, I can finally try to contribute to this site again =D.

==Resolution==

Natively suppported in the Final Fantasy XI Config Utility are (for my 16:10 screen):
1920x1200, 1680x1050, 1600x1200, 1600x900, 1280x1024, 1152x864, 1024x768, 800x600, 640x480

resolutions not listed can be set in the registry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPlayOnlineUSFinalFantasyXI]

*for x64 change it to Wow6432NodeSOFTWARE....
** for other game versions change PlayOnlineUS to either PlayOnlineEU or PlayOnlineJP

0001 - for width
0002 - for height

for 1920x1080 you would set 0001 to 1920 and 0002 to 1080. (decimal)

important! = custom resolutions require a 3rd party program called "FFXI windower", otherwise FFXI will just return something like "Direct3d could not be initialized..."

=Background Resolution=
in FFXI there is a 2nd resolution called "Background Resolution" the Config natively lets you set:
256x256, 512x512 and 1024x1024.

I think its the "base" resolution.
i.e. everything in the game is in the background resolution and then gets scaled to the output resolution.

0003 - for width
0004 - for height

it should be said that the background resolution can be set to a max of 2048x2048, no more.

==Aspect Ratio==

Aspect Ratio can be changed in the ingame menu "Config>Misc.2:Background Aspect Ratio"

The Aspect Ratio can be set independently from the resolution.
You could play the game in 1920x1200 and set the ratio to 4:3.

supported ratios are: 16:10, 16:9, 15:10, 15:9 and 4:3

HUD is not influenced by ratio.

==Cut-Scenes==

Cut-scenes are all ingame rendered and should therefore behave the same as the rest of the game.

Will be adding some screenshots later today or tomorrow.

Black.Arrow, I've got a couple of questions:

1) Does 16:9 give a better viewing angle than 16:10?

2) Are you positive that the background resolution cannot be set higher than 2048 pixels on each axis? I've read elsewhere that it has no limit (also, as a side note, the background resolution doesn't have to be square, either). Would you be willing to test if you can set the background resolution higher than 2048 x 2048?
