Descent? Descent II?

Has anyone figured out how to get the original descent games in widescreen? That would be so cool!

Have you poked around any of the config files or the Registry? I know folks got some old games like Quake, C&C2 and GTA2 to work. It can happen.

Descent is a DOS game, so it's not likely. Descent 2 has a windows version, so it might work. I guess you could try using DOSBox...

There are currently active projects for running both Descent and Descent II on modern machines and operating systems. I use Rebirth since I am mostly interested in the classic experience:

The other great thing about rebirth is that it also supports 16x10 and 16x9 aspect ratios through the ini file. I play at 1680x1050 on my Ferrari 4005 and it looks fantastic!

I use Descent XL for Widescreen. Also, XL is a much more mature and feature rich mod than Rebirth - and you can disable all that extra graphical candy if you want.

I just tried Rebirth. Unfortunately, it seems to stretch the screen. I'd try D2XL, but it looks like it only works for Descent 2, and I don't have that game.

But does it work if you don't have Descent 2? According to this page, you need to "patch Descent 2 to v1.2." This seems to imply that Descent 2 is required to play Descent 1.

I don't think Rebirth stretches the actual game itself, just the cockpit, but I don't play with that anyway. I tried with and without the 16x10 switch at 1680x1050 and with the switch, everything seemed to be displayed correctly. Long live Descent! :-)

No, it definitely stretches the entire screen. I can submit proof if you don't believe me.

What is this "16:10" switch you speak of? I didn't see it when I determined that the game is stretched.

In the d1x.ini file there are a bunch of settings including switches for 16x9 and 16x10 aspect ratios, certainly not as extensive as the options for XL, but good enough for me :-)
