Forum too wide!

Post by Zak »

IMHO it is too wide even for 1680x1050. At work I use dual 1280x1024 and it's too wide too. There is no need for a forum to be this wide, even if it is Widescreen Gaming Forum :D

Zak,

I'm not sure what you're doing, but it scales down to under 1200. There may be some threads with linked pics that "break" the tables. I've tried the forum on 1680x1050, 1400x1050, 1280x1024, and 1280x800 - all using Firefox for WinXP. I've also tried 1680x1050 on Safari. They all look fine. If you're not using Firefox, switch over. IE handles tables much differently.

Issues at 1280 wide with IE disappear with Firefox.

Mine doesn't scale:( If I shrink the window the forum (table) remains the same size, it doesn't resize to fit the window. So I have to keep the window nearly filling my 20" Dell to vie the full width. IE6, XPSP2.

Try Firefox and see if that helps.

IE6 doesn't handle most of the web-standards very well. The only reason it's used is because it's bundled with Windows. ;)

It's not IE (even though I agree you don't put "MS" and "standards" in one sentence), I see the same beehavior with Mozilla on XP and OSX and Safari in OSX: the main forum table won't shrink past certain point when I resize the window. In Safari it takes almost the whole width of 1280 screen, which I guess is what you wanted, but IMHO it's too wide. For example, I think ArsTechnica has the right size.

You are correct in that the forum will only shrink to a certain point. The forum width itself is 1000 pixels. Then the left nav is 170. With the cell padding of about 3, it brings the total width to about 1180.

This was done for consistent layout amongst the forum and non-forum pages. Sorry if you think the forum is too wide. I did adjust the top banner recently, and cut out about 100 pixels. I can look at doing some other enhancements later, but that will take a redesign of the banner and a re-layout of the footer box.

I want to make the site as user-friendly, to as many people as possible. And you're not the first person to ask for a narrower view. But, with everything else going on, it is low on the priority list.

Okay, so you loaded the site banner into a post. But to what end?

I made the mention three posts ago that I had already once adjusted the top banner and made it about 100 pixels smaller than it had been. I realize that the banner is what is constricting the width of the forum (along with the raffle box).

I know of at least two people that either are, or have, worked to redesign and reduce the size of the banner. If you made the post to point out the "problem," then know that was already understood. What I need is not someone else to identify the problem, but to provide a solution.

I think he was trying to point out the slogan of wider is better?

I think maybe the raffel box should go and see how center justifying the logo would work?
I still visit occasionally.

Yes I did load it to support the site's "wide view" preferance in a toungue in cheek fashion.

However, & strangely, in teat very same post that I put the banner,

i only see the button &

not the button.

So I cannot edit that post (should I have desired to do so????

I wonder what's up???

I've noticed that when I click on some posts the screen is wider, and others it fits perfectly. For example, this when I come to this post it fits my screen and I don't have to scroll left or right at all, but there is a post on this section of the forum titled "image gallery ?" when I go to that post, it is too wide. I think it's just little things that have been overlooked that are causing it. because this post follows the same format as the "image gallery ?" one, so maybe it's something like a persons signature being too long or something like that.

If you are looking at a forum post when you see a screen stretched it is either because of a picture posted that is too wide, or a long URL. Pictures force the forum tables wide, and long URLs don't wrap. Signatures do wrap.
