Great to hear that it work.
But it looks like what you are saying...is that it actually cuts the tops and bottom off of the rendering??
So in fact you are getting less of the actual rendering?
Some pictures would be nice!! Some pics of a scene on a normal monitor, and then a pic of that same scene on a widescreen.

No, it doesn't cut anything off the top or bottom - it just does a little better job of pixel stretching a 4:3 ratio image into a 16:9 ratio.
What I was saying is that I wish Cyan/Ubi would provide imaging for a full 16:9 screen ratio - so that it fills a widescreen display WITHOUT pixel stretching. This means that the images they create would show more left and right side detail. Players that don't have widescreen displays would then LOSE this resolution - or a game setting option could allow the player to select the format they wish to play. Kinda like DVDs - you can choose widescreen or standard.
I'm hoping that they've done this for Myst IV Revelation!! From the shots I saw of the E3 show, they were showing the game on widescreen panels!!! YAY!

I don't think so.
URU is a real-time 3D game. The rest of the series is not, there is no way to "hack" the resolution, because there is no resolution to choose from initially. The resolutions in Myst/Riven/Exile are fixed at one resolution.
There could be a hack for realMyst as that's a real-time 3D game, but I don't think there is a "hack" for it to fit on a widescreen display. It would be nice!! ;)

About Syberia and other adventure, games like The Longest Journey. Will this play okay on a 15.4 widescreen? I know they won't be in widescreen format, but will it look normal and play normal right out of the box?

Not true widescreen; this only stretched the video...
Unfortunately, while this mod worked fine for a 1280 x 800 screen, the video in the game is simply stretched to fill the screen. Oh well...
Welp, I believe I figured it out :)
The resolution is held in the "dev_mode.dat" file in binary format. I made a quick program to change this via the command line, so you don't need to break out the ol' hex editor. Download it at:
http://www.prismaticorder.com/urures.exe
All you gotta do is put that file in your Uru folder, then run "urures.exe" So to update my file to run in 1440x900, I'd run "urures.exe 1440 900". Simple enough. Go ahead and virus scan, disassemble, whatever, the program only modifies that one file.
Unfortunately when you start Uru, the initial dialog box that pops up won't accept your new resolution and will revert all your graphic settings back to defaults. To get around this, I've figured out how to bypass this dialog altogether and get right into the game. So, after you modify your resolution with urures.exe, simply run:
UruExplorer.exe -iinit To_Dni
to get directly into the game.
Let me know if this works or doesn't work. Someone is welcome to make a nice GUI launcher to do this :) I'll probably be working on more widescreen mods as I get games, because I'm really enjoying my shiny new widescreen laptop!! I've got a mod figured out to run Dark Age of Camelot in widescreen, but that's more complicated, so it will have to come later before I release anything.
Cheers,
Wogg

I'm afraid that unless you re-encoded all the FMV's into 1280x800, they can't be anything other than stretched. It's the same with all the FMV's in all games.

But, does it affect game play? I mean is it real distracting?

Hi,
I just wanted to find out if the -iinit To_Dni command will work with Complete Chronicles?? I'm not sure if that command switch will only work if you have the expansion pack "To D'ni" installed or if it will work with all versions of URU.
If that command switch will not work, does anyone know the correct command switch.
I have got Complete Chronicles which includes both expansion packs, To D'ni and Path Of The Shell.
Thanks,

Just to update everyone on my WideScreen URU.
Unfortunately I have decided not to run the game in widescreen format, as I have tried the patch for URU that was posted in this forum and the image is definitely stretched and looks a little weird to me.
So I've left it at a default full screen mode and it is running at 1400x1050, and it has two black bars, one on the left and one on the right. This is to compensate for the widescreen, as my native resolution that I use on the laptop is 1680x1050.
I've set everything to the MAX and URU has never looked so amazing and run so smooth!!! While in Canada, I bought URU: Complete Chronicles, so I'm slowly playing through that from beginning to end.

I Also have the Complete Chronicles and was wondering the same thing as asked about the command line and compatability with CC.
anyways, my reason for posting was what I said here in a different thread,
_____Hello, I have recently gotten the UNIWS patcher to get URU running in 1680x1050 widescreen, but in the new dev_mode.dat file it creaters...settings such as coloring are set to 16bit and textures are set to low... I wanted to know if /bow the creater could change the patch so it max's settings out..but I doubt anyone wants to run it with ani/antialiasing on max.. so preferably a few included modified dev_mode files....
*I'm pretty sure most of you were trying it without the added info in the command line therefore it reverts to default settings, the Run c: method wouldn't boot the game *random location not found errors*, so I simply added it on to my URU shortcut on my start menu.*
I know how to do it myself..but I simply can't code worth anything anymore. It's quite sad, I figured if I could look at the defualt Dev_Mode.dat through many conversion I could see what each value is in binary/hex then put mine in after converting them and make my own new file but.. I simply forgot everything about conversions._______
so..summing it all up, we either need to find at way to edit the Dev_mode.dat file for all settings at once b/c when you patch it then go to the config screen to change coloring/texture quality etc.. it defaults back, or i can try to get that urures thing working, b/c logically if that itself can change the rez..then we could select our custom settings in the graphical config menu..then use the program to change the rez...and pinning it to start menu with the -iinit To_Dni line to skip the config menu so nothing defaults..
I know through reverse process of elimination of re converting all defualt hex/binary in the dat file we could figure out what is what then splice in all settings we want at once for it

O.k... I've got uru Complete Chronicles and I tried using the uniws.exe but although it patched o.k. when I tried to run: "C:uruUruExplorer.exe -iinit To_Dni" It gives me an error: "There was an error initializing your graphics settings, try lowering your resolution" So I guess the "-iinit To_Dni" Doesn't work with uru complete chronicles. Does anyone know what the command to fix this is??? How do I go straight to the game without URU checking the resolution????

Using the Patcher forces the game to use low quality settings for everything, if you read above you will see that.
Myst 4: Uru
I saw that... But it doesn't allow me to start up the game at all! when I put that command into the run box, the game should start and it doesn't. it gives me the error then when I click o.k., it exits out!

I simply added that to a start menu shortcut and it worked, but the problem is it's set to low settings. I also have the Complete Chronicles.

When you play the game in 800 x 600 it seems that it is in widescreen format. I undid the patch and played at 800 x 600 it was stretched all the way across my screen. When I do the patch and type in the command : "UruExplorer.exe -iinit To_Dni" it gives me the error and reverts everything back to defaults! So the patch doesn't work on my uru Complete chronicles as near as I can tell! Hopefully someone will come up with a widescreen patch soon!

It does work, you must first set the game to a defualt res, then patch it, then make a shortcut and add that cmd line info. what annoys me though is Uru Live has been patched to work with widescreen lcd's and supports all res/ratio's.. but they won't take 15 mins and patch the non online one to work like that, End of Ages does which runs off the Uru Engine.
Myst 4: Uru
That's what I did... I unpatched the game and set everything back to defaults. Then I ran the patch and set the resolution to 1900 x 1280 and added the command C:uruUruExplorer.exe -iinit To_Dni to my start menu chortcut and ran it! i get the same error and the game doesn't start. when I try to run uru from the desktop shortcut, it tells me "Failed to load graphics settings from file, using defaults". Which is exactly what it does! If I remove the patch, that is the same as with the patch on! There is no difference! I'm not sure how you're getting it to work because i cannot.... :(
