2560x1080 vs 3440x1440

Post by cubester »

Hello everyone,

I'm new here, and I've a question about 21:9 monitors.

I'm currently using a 29" 2560x1080 21:9 monitor, and I'm considering upgrading to a 34" 3440x1440 monitor (or 2560x1080, I don't know yet). Anyway, as for the question(s):
I'm wondering what the difference in displayed content is between the two resolutions when gaming. Do you actually see a lot more rendered on a 3440x1440 monitor, or is it the same as on the lower resolution, but sharper due to the higher pixel density? (Hope this question makes sense)

Also, it's the same aspect ratio, but if there's more content rendered on the 3440x1440 monitor, does that mean that the distortion near the edges is worse than on a 2560x1080 monitor?

These might seem like silly questions, but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this matter.
Also, I'm not sure where I should put this post, so I hope it's in the correct forum category.

Hi,

Most games nowadays are set to display the exact same thing in all 21:9 Resolutions.
So you would only get a sharper picture.
We gonna send it to outa space!

It is just like the jumps from 1600x900 > 1920x1080 > 2560x1440. By an large all everything is the same. Everything will be crisper, and you'll have a larger screen with more detail.

Some bits may be appear slightly smaller. These would be 2D sprites and elements - NPC markers, test boxes, HUD elements, text. But, they should be rare. And given the increase in panel size (29" > 34"), they would probably appear close to the same size anyway.

Thanks for replying. I guess that's sorted out then.
All that's left now is to decide on the resolution then, I guess. :)

At the moment I'm sitting on AOC 29" 2560x1080 and waiting for my new Dell 34" Curved 3440x1440... so if you wait two weeks I can give you my view of it ;)

Greetings! Been lurking for a while and finally made an account. Just wanted to say that I recently upgraded from an Asus 29" 2560x1080 monitor to the new Samsung 34" 3440x1440 curved VA panel.

Whine I'm still deciding on if the curve is gimmicky or not, I can say as far as size/resolution is concerned, there is a night and day difference. Having said that, I'm not sure I'd be satisfied with the PPI on a 1080 34" class display.

I've got a the LG 34UM95 and its great. I'd def say the increased vertical resolution made the step up from a standard 1080p monitor that much more impressive.

While its a stunning display it is noticeable how far away the edges of the screen look, if the curved version wasn't so much more expensive I'd have gone for that myself, still a stunning display but if you can I would say go for a curved one.

cubester, I Feel Your Pain. I Currently Have A Budget Of $1200 And I AM Lost As To Which Way To Go. I've Been "Researching" For About A Month And I Am No Closer To Deciding On A Set Up. This Seems Like The Place To Cure My Problem, I Don't Trust A Coin Toss.

Some Say Go Big And Save Some Money. Everything Will Appear Larger And Have Enough Detail To Suit Your Purpose. I Was Looking At The LG 55LB6300 Its An IPS HDTV With 24ms Display Lag And $800

Others Say Go For Resolution (1440). Smaller (32") (BenQ BL3200PT $650), You Won't Regret The Detail And The IPS Doesn't Matter. You Can Add On Later For A Multi Monitor Set Up.

Others Say Go For The 27",1080 Resolution (BenQ XL2720Z $450). The IPS Will Matter If I Go To A Multi Monitor Setup, Plus They Last Longer.

One Thing They All Seem To Agree On, Is That Display Lag Is Important.

This Setup Would Be Used Strictly For Gaming, Mainly Flight Sims. I Sit @ 4'- 5" Away From The Screen. So, Spend My Budget Like A Drunken Sailor.......

Thank You In Advance For Your Input....

loocifer, having tried everything - I say go with the 34" 21:9. Perfect mix of res, pixel density, aspect ratio and physical size. 34" 3440x1440 is **SOOO** much better than 29" 2560x1080.
