Darksiders II - The way it is meant to be played (almost)

Post by helifax »

I for one, am a big fan of the DarkSiders series. Recently I started to play the two games again. While my plugin for Darksiders I works very well enabling Surround resolutions, the UI is not centered and honestly it didn't trouble me that much as the main UI positions are close to the center screen.

In DarkSiders II however, it wasn't that simple and the same. The most annoying things are the HUGE subtitles, Stretched cutscenes (bik videos) a non-working minimap, WRONG aspect ratio map and HUGE target nameplates only to enumerate a few.
I had a plugin previously that tried to correct the minimap problem but unfortunately it didn't correct the other aspects (except the map aspect ratio) and even introduced other problems.

Fear not, I took another look at the game and have created a plugin that FIXES almost all the above issues.

Comparison

- Cutscenes:

New:
1

Old:
1- Whole UI and Minimap is now centered (Minimap is displayed at a stretched aspect ratio. Unfortunately this was all I could do since the game is using Scaleform for the UI and is painful to do more)

New:
1

Old:
1

- Nameplates, targets and hit numbers

New:
1

Old:
1- All menus are centered

New:
1

Old:
1- Subtitles in Cutscenes are not properly sized and centered

New:
1

Old:
1- Tool tips (help) no longer display that UGLY black overlay in the middle of the screen

New:
1Old:
1- Map displayed using the correct aspect ratio

Important:

There is ONE MAJOR problem though... Since the game it uses Scaleform for the UI and I am centering the interface and menus, the mouse cannot be used in any of the menus to select things ( Actually you can, but the logical buttons are still stuck on the left screen...) Most of the times this will not be an issue...except in the inventory where you need the mouse to select the tabs (armor, weapons etc). In this case you have to disable the fix in the menus and re-enable it again in the main game.

However, the game WAS never meant to be played with keyboard and mouse as you can clearly see from the design, thus I highly RECOMMEND to use an Xbox-360 controller and you will have 0 issues.

You can safely grab the plugin from my website : 3D Surround Gallery => My WideScreen Fixer Mods
You will also be able to see the plugin in action (In the following days) on my website at: 3D Surround Gallery => Game List. (in both 2D and 3D)

As all my fixes it is meant to work with Steam version and illegitimate copies are not supported (and chances are the fix will not work with a cracked version)

Best Regards,
Helifax

Fixed the incorrect aspect Ratio of the minimap markers.
I was able to test with the following resolutions:
3840x800 (+bezels)
4800x1024 (+bezels)
5040x1050 (+bezels)
and was working correctly.

Probably it will work for 5760x1080 also, although I cannot test it.

For the latest version simply re-download the plugin from my website.

Great work Helifax.
I can confirm this fix works on 5760x1080, cutscenes and the majority of the HUD looks unstretched.
However menus and minimap icons are slightly off-center (see below), and in my opinion the menus are too finicky for solely keyboard control.

Yes, I noticed that too, this is the only engine so far where if I push the UI to the left one monitor + bezel resolution it actually pushes it even more -_-. It also uses a lot of weird calculations inside...
I will look some more on the centering;))
As for the minimap I need a setut with 5760x1080 monitors...any takers?;))
