My eyefinity rig only reconnects all displays correctly after reboot maybe 60% of the time.

Anyone know of an answer to this?

And is this a common problem?

The system runs great once connected, so its not a cable, or active adapter problem.

If I reboot with a 1-2hour gap its about 90% reliable, if I leave it overnight its about 60% reliable.

Odd thing is if I dismantle completely and shift the system its about 60% likely to reboot back to 5x1 fine.

Also have now experienced the same problem over two cards HD6990 using MDP connectors, and now a HD7970 using display port.

Screens are 32" Samsung HDTV 1920x1080, into HDMI/DVI combo port. I've forced the EDID and it made no difference.

Problem seems to be improving with each Catalyst release..

thanks in advance for any advice.

Hey mate not sure if this will help but sounds like could be the dp adapters....
What res are u running? 9600x1080 or 5400x1920 portrait?

How have you setup the screens:

6990: 4x mini dp > dp adapter > DVI + DVI > DVI

7990: 4x dp adapter > DVI + DVI > DVI
(I'm assuming u have the ASUS 6 output card)

Sorry to sound stupid but how many active adapters? any passive? same brands?
I had problems using my 7870 e6 cards (all mini dp) with all active adapters, seem to work best with 2 passives (Was using in a softTH setup)
Also on my setup i have "display port failure" type errors and "cannot display the resolution", this is on my 15 monitor setup using 17' lcds BUT i found lowering the resolution helped, and incidentally this always occurred after coming from screen saver or start up (80-90% of the time). I would setup my screen (which is a tedious chore) at 6400x3072 (max res) then random screens would suddenly go to lower res (1024x768) and f*** up my vid wall setup and because it was in windows, softTH wouldn't play the game... I had about a 25% chance that it would work from start up and like i said it was common to drop res on random screens after screen saver (I just put screens to sleep for a s/saver) Now i run my wall at 4000x1800 (800x600 per lcd) the messages still appear but everything works fine for games & vlc...

So perhaps try lowering res (Maybe try 1360x768) as an adapter may be playing up, a single lcd dropping res would stuff up the whole eyefinity setup (Sorry for going off topic a bit....)

Hey, appreciate the info. 15 Monitors ! blimey and I thought my cables were a hassle..

I'm running 5400x1920, HD6990, 4xMDP Active (same brand generic) + 1xDVI passive, (Win7x64)

And same problem with HD7970 3xDP-HDMI, 1xDVI-HDMI

And yes you're right about lower resolutions seem to work better, but I think its to do with windows plugnplay monitor settings and hot plug detect.

Since posting I done some more digging and noticed that on my standard desktop one of the monitors was reported as 'generic plug-n-play' in device manager, although through the EDID tool it reported correctly as a Acer T232HL and gave it full HD.

I'm pretty sure the adapters are part of the problem, and I agree with you that I reckon its more reliable with a mix of active and passive adapters - I'm suspicious that the actives don't pass thru the EDID reliably so you end up getting slammed back to lowest resolution of a generic monitor - probably 800x600 whenever theres a glitch.

I've found three interesting things that smell like a smoking gun..

Home theatre guys report blocking pin19 on HDMI cables prevents the hot plug detect function from detecting when a monitor/tv/projector is turned off so fools smart AV amps into staying in hi-res mode when switching between inputs. So same probably applies to DVI/VGA/DP.

Windows seems to do a hot plug detect fairly frequently and anything other than a perfect EDID report pings you back to low res 'generic non-plug n play' settings.. It looks like Hot plug detect might be disabled through USB power saving settings/ not sure on this. It might be that a mix of passives and actives just makes the odd of failure less..

And it all seems to relate back to Windows installing its generic plug n play monitor driver when it doesn't recognise the monitor EDID which results in resolutions of max 800x600 (monitor.inf), I'm not sure how it then cranks this up later.

So I've now seen this same problem across two cards and three setups so its something fundamental in the combination of windows and adapters. not cards or screens.

- you might want to poke in a better default EDID to force everything to a better resolution as a default..

Cheers
