Yeah I thought that was it, I did try to set the value to 0 before I posted but nothing changed, it doesn't switch to window mode for me.

ahh got it working now: only one problem:
whenever I use 1280x600 I don't see the options in conversations
so I can't see what I'm saying to people

looks/works great other than that though, but still not at all playable because of this minor irritation

any ideas on how to solve this?

UndaC, I believe your monitor native mode is 1280x720. You can/should test res output of the OS to your monitor first. For example, change/test your OS desktop to 1280x600. Now, if you want to edit swkotor2.ini fullscreen=1 and 1280x600 you will have only 1280x600 of the game on your monitor.

TestType, did you verify that you saved your change in the ini? Did you test with fullscreen=0 and other standard res like, 800x600?

UndaC, since 1280x768 works w/ conversation, try setting your OS desktop to 1280x768: Your monitor might be able to output that. Else, you can try with the scrolling option under your video adapter setting: 1280x768 desktop to a 1280x720 monitor. You can scroll down whenever there's conversation in the game.

My monitor is 1280x720 yes but it does stretch 1280x600 to 1280x720 without any cropping going on.

My OS is set to 1280x600 before I start the game.
I've also tried running the game in windowed mode while leaving XP in 1280x720 mode.

Still no visable options in the conversations:

[Display Options]
FullScreen=1
Disable Movies=0
Disable Intro Movies=1
Sort Modules=1
Width=1280*
Height=600*
BitsPerPixels=32
RefreshRate=60

* Tried 800x600 and 1024x768 and 1280x720 as well which made no difference.

[Graphics Options]
V-Sync=0
Anisotropy=16
Frame Buffer=1
Anti Aliasing=4
Texture Quality=2
Grass=1
Soft Shadows=1
Shadows=1
Brightness=57
RefreshRate=60
Height=600*
Width=1280*
EnableHardwareMouse=1
FullScreen=1

I also tried first starting the game in 800x600 before I edited to ini-file.

It looks incredibly nice in full WS, so if anyone has any ideas on how I could solve this please let me know.

For the record I see a few millimeters of the black bars that are on top and bottom of the screen during conversations. But no text is visable.

If I change to any 4:3 or 5:4 ratio the text becomes visable.

It is as if the text and black bars during conversations are "stuck" in 1280x1024 mode.....

They probably did what Bioware did for KotOR: code a different HUD for each resolution. One HUD for 1024x768, another for 1280x960, another for 1280x1024 and so on...

So it's defaulting to a 4:3 ratio for the HUD/conversations, even though you're not running at that res: the text options are off the bottom of the screen.

I can't get any of these to work although I don't doubt that they do. I kind of wonder if 1600x1024 would work since both resolutions are supported. (I'm assuming 1600x1200 works.) I'm going to try some new drivers and see what I can come up with.

Well I got 1600x1024 to work with my setup.

Dell 2005fpw
Leadtek 6800GT
Nvidia 71.20 drivers

Just to let people know, this resolution is so close to native 1680x1050 that you should not stretch the image in either the drivers or the monitor settings. Keep your monitor at 1:1 and if you're using nvidia drivers use the centered option pictured below under the digital flat panel settings in the nvidia drivers.

First thing I had to do was to create a custom desktop resolution of 1600x1024. I did this in the nvidia drivers by clicking add under custom resolutions and refresh rates and then just adding in the the resolution.

After that its merely a matter of setting up the width and height in the swkotor2.ini file like below.

The menu's look a little stretched but other than that I think it looks pretty good.

PS - If having the images up are a problem I can just leave a link for them.

Also I made a custom timing of 1600x960 out of 1920x1080 for my 800xt. This is a little cropped but much closer to a 16:9 resolution (16:10). This works better than 1280x960 stretched.

Yes, I saved for sure and I've now tried it with the normal resolutions and it still won't play in a window :(

TestType, did you edit under [Graphic Options] because there is also [Display Options]?

Yes, I edited under graphics options. I have no idea why it doesn't just work. Here's how my graphics options part of the ini looks:

[Graphics Options]
Grass=1
Shadows=1
EnableHardwareMouse=1
FullScreen=0
AllowSoftShadows=1
RefreshRate=60
Width=1024
Height=768
V-Sync=1
Texture Quality=2
Anti Aliasing=0
Emitters=1
Anisotropy=1
Frame Buffer=1
Soft Shadows=0
Brightness=57

Testtype, what's your OS video res, and adapter/driver? Try these if you haven't

backup your swkotor2.ini
delete the active swkotor2.ini
re-configure graphic in kotor2 with 800x600
edit the new swkotor2.ini to fullscreen=0
if that still doesn't work then
update your driver and/or re-install the game

good luck

My OS res is 1280x800 and I'm using the stock drivers that came with my ASUS M6BNe laptop (ATi Mobility Radeon 9700 64mb).

I tried deleting the ini and configuring it for 800x600, still didn't work. I'll try re-installing the game and/or finding modded drivers for the mobility card when I have a bit more time on my hands. Thanks much for all your help wickedwings.

I don't believe 1280x800 will work. An 800 vertical resolution is not supported by this game. 1024x600, 1280x600, 1280x768, 1600x768, and 1600x1024 should all work. I've only tested 1280x768 and 1600x1024 though, as the other resolutions are impractical. In order for this to work the game has to support both the horizontal and the vertical resolution. You also do not have to run this game in windowed mode if you simply follow the guide.

UObean:
Ihave tried your technique of creating a custom desktop, but when adding the resolution 1600*1024 it just says it cant be done.
Also tried playing around with that ini file, but with no luck...

Any ideas?
