NVIDIA Surround is only designed to work with 1x3 I'm afraid, if you want a 1x5 setup you'll have to use AMD/ATI. NVIDIA can run accessory displays thought, so a 1x3 plus an extended desktop area, not sure about having two though, at least not without an extra card.

be advised that not all 7970 Support 5 Displays! you can either use 2xDVI or DVI+HDMI

so you need a special version of the 7970 that is capable of 5 or 6 monitors.
suiken_mieux has a wonderful list of all cards that supported support that.

(can't link that right now, writing from smartphone, try searching) Admin Edit:- http://www.wsgf.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=24334

edit: oh... and you need to plug all monitors into one card!
We gonna send it to outa space!

I think you could run two GTX600 series cards or higher, but not SLI them and just run them separately, for max of 8 monitors. They wouldn't be in surround obviously, but you could play any game in windowed mode on it. So something like 6 monitor setup with 3 in surround x2, or 5 monitors should be possible, but I'm really not sure. nV drivers are kind of weird.

Yeah nvidia only will go 3x1, no other variations (I think they are working on 2x1 support in new drivers)
If you are set on nvidia using a 5x1 setup then as mentioned above get 2 cards (Which support a minimum 5 monitors altogether, 1 card runs 3, the other 2, or more..) and use softTH (I love selling this program, its the best freeware out there!!!) At least u can optimise softTH to use CUDA cores (In the config file, nonlocal transport = CUDA32 or something like that) but is limited to dx9.

If you want everything to work sweet and easy then ATI is the go but as was stated you MUST GET THE 6 MONITOR EDITION as when you xfire the video outputs on the second card are disabled (I found out the hard way and used softTH after getting 2x 7970 ref cards). Also if you have multiple mini dp outputs the make sure you have enough ACTIVE MINI DP TO DVI CONVERTERS (As you will be using at least 1 DVI output on the card) ONLY 2 PASSIVE DP TO DVI CONVERTERS CAN BE USED.

If you have enough space between your 16x pci-e slots (3 free slots would be best for this card) then this is the go: https://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/HD7970DC2T3GD5/

There are other brands just make sure it has 6 outputs on the card.... (PS: I have seen cards with 5 outputs but only support 4 screens such as my powercolor 6990 and sapphire vapor-x 6gb 7970)

Back in 2006 I did TH2G+SoftTH to achieve 5x1 on Nvidia. I'm sure that still works but it's is an inefficient hack way of doing it.

You can use SoftTH, but only for games that use DirectX9.
If you use SoftTH there is no use for Nvidia Surround.
You can use mulpiple cards and it comes with bezel management, but it will cost you some frames.
I used it with a six moinitor setup in to different settings:
1 - Two matrox tripleheads on one card
2 - Two cards with each 3 monitors.

The 1 card solution is the best, it performs better because no data needs to be transferred from one card to another.

With Nvidia Quadro you can have 4 x 4 monitors or the 5 x 1 as you want. It will even do it in 3d Vision. however im not sure how games work with the cards and if you only need 1 of them and some normal gpus. Im sure someone can go further with this.
