HD6670 OK for triple screen gaming?

Post by Greyhawk101 »

Hi WSGF! My first post here

Just got this card and looking to give eyefinity a try. Not got any other hardware yet though...is this card any good with triple screen? I have a quad core I7 system with 6GB ram (Dell XPS8000). Currently using an LG HDTV

ehm nope.

Kinda sure the card lacks a LOT of power for Eyefinity 5760*1080 pixel! BF3 and stuff might run on Ultra Low settings with 30-40 fps.

You'd need at least a HD7770 to test out eyefinity. Better a HD7870/50 for decent performance.

Not too bothered about 1080p

Post by Greyhawk101 »

Not too bothered about 1080p to be honest, I can play at lower resolutions ( i prefer it in some cases as the text can be too small). I'd like a better card but because I have a Dell, there's the usual PSU problems. I dont know why Dell insist on fitting sub standard PSU's to even their gaming PC's...

I have to agree with you on the whole cheap psu in Dell pc's thing, but that begs the question: why do you own one? Have to agree with Haldi though. Gaming on three screens on your gpu is never going to work.

It takes alot from a system to drive 5700x1080.

Dell outfits low wattage PSU's to:
1) keep cost low
2) keep it green. Hard to say your Dell will use a ton of electricity if its limited in wattage.

Yeah sure ^^ that only works with people who have no knowledge about electricity or Computer PSU's.

i have a 1500W PSU in my computer. But because it's Gold labeled... nearly got platin.... i'd bet it's more efficient than this Dell PSU. ( and yes! even on 10% performance!)!

From my experience, VRAM is your biggest issue when it comes to Eyefinity. As long as you drop AA and have the VRAM, even higher quality textures don't slow you down too much. But as always with processing power, the more the better. You can definitely game on that without stutter, and as the years progress you can lower the settings a bit.

Though personally, I suggest you rob a bank and get yourself triple 7970s. :D

Vram is only an issue when your gpu has the power to support higher graphical settings (e.g. resolution and AA). In the case of the 6670 having only 1gb of vram isn't an issue since higher settings aren't playable anyway. The more power the gpu has, the more vram you need.

Well I got it because it was a deal plus free upgrade to an i7 quad from an i5 - which at the time was worth a lot of money :D

Anyway, I can try it and see. If it's too slow I'll just have to stop being a cheapskate! Just ordered three monitors so will let you know if (when) I manage to set it up how slow/rubbish/adequate it turns out to be...

Of course,

yet when your system ramps up it has a 1500watt limit vs. 300watt. Thus the 'green' side of things from a marketing standpoint.

i.e. "our computers are equipped with efficient low wattage power supplies"

Its a marketing and cost reason only.

You don't have to buy 3

Post by Haldi »

You don't have to buy 3 Monitors.

You can check out the "Multi Monitor Performance Simulator" to get Games running in 5760*1080 resolution!

Just got them today

Post by Greyhawk101 »

Just got them today unfortunately my active DP adapter is sent by Royal Mail so I wont get it for two weeks (if ever). Also found the monitor does not come with a DVI lead - just one VGA lead /sigh

Anyway got two running on HDMI and DVI. Only problem I've had is Civ 5 which was unplayable until I lowered the AA to x2 from x8. I had a bit of slowness in X3 : Albion Prelude but all my other games are fine so far. As I thought, the HD resolution makes text too small so I'll kely be lowering the res on most of my games.

CAN you? Yea probably. I'd recommend making a 1920X1080 windowed game with something like that though.

Games I have played so

Post by Greyhawk101 »

Games I have played so far:

All games in 1080p x 3

X3 Albion Prelude - No slowdown
Everquest 2 - A bit slow but fine for me on high detail (game has two more detail settings, very high and ultra)
Dungeons & Dragons Online - no issues on Ultra High Detail
Half Life 2 : Using Fake Factory mod (ultra high detail textures) - no slowdown although game itself can glitch a little on 3 monitors graphics wise
Civ 5 - no issues on maximum detail 2xAA although crashes if you zoom out too far
Skyrim - unplayable. Unplayable on two monitors as game is all over the place
Star Wars : The Old Republic - Probably too slow for you guys but fine for me on highest detail settings. AA off.
Unreal Tournament 3 - very fast but carry a sick bag lol...

Issues seen so far - one monitor scales down leaving a black border around the image if I use any resolution other than 1080p. Everquest 2 has about a 20% chance of not loading correctly on startup - giving some graphics glitches. Civ 5 crashes if you zoom out. Skyrim is a mess.
