It has been already answered that E IPS monitors are sometimes 6 bit. But Googling " S-IPS 6-bit" Found me no answers.
Out of 50 pages i went through, only ONE page reports this new monitor I have as 6 bit and the rest including the manufacturer page have hidden the amount of colors the monitor produces.
All the stats are printed in the manual , except colors it can produce. It is claimed to be S-IPS , yet there is banding in gradients.

DAVI DPL240F1 24"

i'M nearly done with a review, but seems that only people in Korea can order this online and not in stores, I don't know if this will serve any purpose for people in this community. So not sure if I should post my opinions.

Yes, in answer to your question.

Was that even a question?

As far as I am aware, the screen is only capable of displaying 6 bits per colour, not the full 8 bits.

It can only show 262000 odd REAL colours.

With a proper 8 bit panel, you get 16.7M colours.

The extra colours (the missing 16.5M) are derived by dithering. I don't pretend to know precisely what dithering is, but there is a wiki article about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dithering

My understanding is that the other colours you miss, the 16.5 million are not really missed. Most people would have a hard time seeing the difference anyway, I am sure I would. Shown side by side with each other, you might be able to make out the difference between the 2, but viewing on a 6 bit with dithering screen, you wouldn't notice the difference.

Why do we have these screens??? Well, TN panels are cheap, IPS have been expensive. People would rather sell more products, than make better products. IPS would of been an even better technology if people would of pushed it forwards in technology, instead of economy.

And, PLEASE post your review!!!!

Thanks for the well thought out reply :) I kinda get the jist of TN panels and also Dithering in other panels, but i think there has been little to no?? discussion on use of 6bit on IPS. Im deciding if the panel has overdrive or some Faroudja processing to blame instead on it since it is only a 6ms panel. That is possible as demonstrated on the SPVA panels by Dell in the past.

Well i Have 2 pages of my review and i left out OSD functions and some other details and could use a few additional pictures. It will be up in a little later :)

If you see banding across a colour gradient, you can see the fact that it's not giving you 16.7M colours. Some games do their best to only stick to colours they know are in the palette of a 6-bit screen, but most do not (and rightly so). It's also a serious concern for the colour accuracy of pictures/photographs - don't go editing them on a 6-bit panel or they'll look terrible when printed.

The Dell U2311H is also a 6-bit IPS panel - something I didn't know when I bought one - but when I found out, I had an answer for why I wasn't happy with the colours it was displaying. :(

E-IPS panels use FRC (Frame Rate Control/Temporal Dithering) instead of regular dithering. It basically displays multiple frames of different colors in succession that gives the appearance of a specific color. FRC is more accurate than regular dithering, but banding may still be noticeable. It can also be color calibrated to be just as accurate as any 8-bit IPS. Pretty soon I'm going to be going from my current 8-bit IPS panel to a 6-bit E-IPS panel and I'll do my usual color calibrations and banding checks. I'll post here when I have results.
