Age of Empires 2 Conquerors (AOE2) Widescreen fix?
Howdy
I'm looking to get the widescreen fix for Age of Empires 2 (Conquerors stand alone expansion). I searched this board many times trying to find it, but apparently the post with it was removed and is no longer available.
Can someone please help me and post the fix to get widescreen on this classic game?
I just got a 1280x800 trubrite screen and it's great. Widescreen forever.

That isn't the only topic that's gone AWOL... interesting.
The Age of Mythology method should work: they use the same engine, after all... :)

For some reason it wont let me choose the "1280x1024" option. Also I dont see any "play in window" option either.

OK, try this instead:
Not sure if this will work, bit it's worth a try. Add xres=xxxx and yres=yyyy on the end of the target line of the shortcut you use to start the game. Replace 1680 and 1050 with your wanted values,
Code: Select all
"C:Program FilesAge of Empires 2aoe2.exe" xres=1680 yres=1050Not sure if this will work, bit it's worth a try. Add xres=xxxx and yres=yyyy on the end of the target line of the shortcut you use to start the game. Replace 1680 and 1050 with your wanted values,

OK, so what resolutions can you run on your laptop?
Does the readme give you any hints as to commandline switches?
And you shouldn't have used 1680 and 1050... they were just an example. You should have used the values relevant to your screen. Try it with 1280 and 800.

I also have Age of Empires II and these ideas don't work for me. In fact, the executable file is not "aoe2.exe" but is actually this on my system:
"C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesAge of Empires IIempires2.exe"
and when I try this in the desktop shortcut:
"C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesAge of Empires IIempires2.exe" xres=1680 yres=1050
it looks no different than the regular 1280x1024 which is to say that things are stretched. I have the new Gateway 21" widescreen 2185 panel (which I must say is awesome).
So maybe AOE2 is limited to 1280=1024 or the settings shown in this forum don't seem to work.

Okay, none of these work. AOE2 does not use the same engine as AOM or AOE3. This game came out like 5-6 years ago, no one had widescreen monitors. There is no run-in-window option and the game only supports three resolutions no matter what. If your monitor doesn't support one or two of those three resolutions they are just greyed out in the menu.
The command-line options don't work. I couldn't find anything else to even try... except a post that said that at one point there was a fix... I would really really really like this fix. I've searched all over the place.
If you have Age of Empires II: Age of Kings then the executable name is empires2.exe, if you have the The Conquerors add-on then the executable name is age2x.exe

I think I found the Fix
This fix is by no means perfect. Sometimes it resets it self, and you will notice that instead of black bars, the screen will stretch and you will see triple on the left side. To fix this, just mess around resolution, or reset the setting in the game. ( go to 800 x 600, then back to 1024 to 768). In AOE the main screen is in 800 x 600, so it will be stretched, but once you load up a game it works fine. Its better than nothing though. GL." alt="" />

Re: Age of Empires 2 Conquerors (AOE2) Widescreen fix?
I've created a patch! So far it's only been tested (and not even much) with 1680x1050, my laptop resolution.
What it does: It changes the effective resolution of the 1280x1024 choice to 1680x1050 (but other options are possible), by changing some of the occurrences of 1280, 1024 and related numbers inside the binary.
It also changes all interface graphics that are 1280x1024 to 1680x1050, it this point only by duplicating the centermost line a number of times. It doesn't actually widen it yet, since I don't have enough info on the SLP rle encoding yet.
It writes a new exe and a new version of interfac.drs, both with a different name. The patched exe refers to this new interfac.drs, not to the original one. You can't lose anything.
It currenly works on the gamecopyworld version of age2_x1.exe since my laptop doesn't have a cd drive, it should be trivial-ish to port it to the unpatched executable too. (Conquerers Expansion, v1.0c).
Manual: quircky so far: inside the AoE2 folder, create a folder Patch, create a folder Data in it. Copy the input.txt and exe there and run the exe (from the data folder). It doesn't say anything yet, but you'll see the files. Note that it looks for the files in ....age2x_1.exe and ..Datainput.txt so you need to follow the instructions.....
Microsoft.Net 3.5 required.
Let me know what your opinions are!
