I want some inputs on the propriety of using an LCD TV (32" or 37") as a PC Monitor. I mean can I put an LCD TV on my table and sit before it (3 feet away) in a chair for gaming or for work? Would it be bad for the eyes? Are there any other problems that I should be aware of? Lastly, are there any particular models among Samsung, LG and Sony that are better than others for this sort of setup?

I am actually on the look out for a new Full HD Display (27" or higher) to run my PC, PS3 and XBOX 360. Dell U2711 was an obvious choice since I had been using a 20" S-IPS display (Dell 2007WFP) for the last 4 years and absolutely love it. The U2711 costs a small fortune, but I was willing to go for it. However I recently came to know about this ridiculous Dell policy in my country that allows them to give any arbitrary display of same size as replacement in case of RMA. For instance, while back, A guy who got a faulty U2711 was given an old refurbished 2707WFP as replacement saying that it qualifies as a replacement since the size is same. Naturally, I don't like the idea of such a thing happening after I shell out a premium for the display (although the fact that there is only a single 27" model negates the likelihood of such a thing happening).

The other 27" Monitors that I have in my country are the Benq M2700HD, Viewsonic VX2739 and HP 2709m all of which are typical TN Panel fare and I haven't heard anything good about them ether. On the flip side there are a number of 32" LCD TV's that come within the price range of the U2711. So I want to explore that option as well. Do note that I don't have space for anything more than a 37" display.

I'm not really a fan of using HDTVs as monitors as the pixel pitch is too large, but... they swap a 2711 for a 2707? WTF? They're not even remotely similar.

I'd be tempted to try contacting Dell management in the US, then if that doesn't work, kicking up a fuss with some tech news sites, see if Dell management notices when a potential internet shitstorm hits them.

tv or monitors are pretty much the same thing now. I use 3 lg led 42 inch fullhd tvs for my surround gamerig, response time is 3.5ms and the image is superb and i sit about 3 to 4 feet from them.

just make sure you get ones with a low response time as some lcd/led tvs can have higer response times, however plasma are much faster, but not really suitable to be sitting so close due to the heat.

^^ Isn't there any eye strain when sitting so close to an LCD TV?

I've been using my 55" LED for a bit of gaming, with no problems. It's sharp enough that I'd be comfortable using it as a regular monitor. Id still prefer an actual monitor, though.

Guy's, does any one have experience using any of these LCD TV's for PC usage? If you have, please kindly post your impressions.

i don't have any experience with THOSE specific LCD's, but i used a 37" Westinghouse for my main PC display for a while. i LOVED gaming on that thing. it was a ton of fun. it does look a bit funny when you have such a big screen and your max resolution is 1080p (not in game, but talking about windows desktop), but i got used to it pretty quickly. it would be ideal to sit back further if possible (if you have a big enough table or if you can wallmount the beast).

don't have it anymore, but i definitely plan on a similar setup soon.

So long as they're 1080i/p and have a low-input lag ability, you'll be fine. MY LG television has a VGA port, which looks aweful, and the ability to select the HDMI ports as "PC", which cuts out any color filters and other features that increase the input lag. Chances are pretty good that at least one of those sets does, too.

Just find the manuals and do a text-search for "PC". You'll surely find an answer there.


You coudl also go for a PC monitor that has tv-friendly inouts such as HDMI. I've connected VCRs, DVD/BR players, adn cable boxes to my Dell u2410 and they all looked pretty good.

looking for some help in this area.
