Modem/Router Question

Post by Yui »

Hi. I currently have a modem that has more than one lan output and a wireless router that also has more than one lan output. Both are connected to each other. My question is that if I would want to use wired internet access on one of my PC, where should I connect it to? Should I connect it to the modem's lan port or to the router's? Which will produce better results?

Note: Again, both my modem and router have multiple lan ports

Thanks

I think you should connect it to the device that is the DHCP server.. Otherwise you won't get a IP address.

Do you have a WAN port on the router? Normally this is connected to the modem. The modem gives a IP address to the Router and the router gives IP addresses to the wireless and wired PC/laptop.

If you connect the router/modem the way you have, you also could plug a wired connection in either.
But a PC on the modem won't be able to "see" a wired/wireless PC on the router..
