I'm constructing an offbeat computer desk as I make some interesting demands from my furniture. I'm currently attempting to pick a triple monitor stand to build into it. I'd originally settled on the
Ergotron DS-100 until I found the WSGF review for the
Ergotech Triple Desk Stand. I'd much prefer the Ergotech stand, if for nothing else, because it can accommodate monitors larger than 19". Seeing as how this community has already changed my mind about one aspect of my project, I'd like to submit the whole thing for critique.
To save myself a lot of explaining here's, a
rendering of the computer desk that may be viewed in Google SketchUp. The program is a little basic, so please bare with it. While the curved portion of the desk seems to be constructed of trapezoids, it's actually a smooth curve. The red piece will be affixed to the short surface of the desk, and is equipped to slide around the desk's perimeter. The gray pole protruding from the center of the red piece is the pole that would otherwise be attached to the base of a monitor stand. There are grommets for both the Ergotron and the Ergotech monitor stands that replace the base, and it is with such that I'll attach this pole to my own sliding base. The legs of the desk will also be fixed to either each other or to the floor to provide more structural support.
Now, I'm no engineer, I'm just a guy with an idea. I don't know that the desk would actually support the weight of three monitors, much less three monitors sliding around all the time. I also know that they only recommend using a grommet for single or dual monitor stands. I'm wondering if it might be better to just bolt a single flush mount to the base. I could also fabricate my own mount. All mounts available from Ergotech are detailed
here. Truth is, I'm just not sure what would actually be best.
I'm building a desk that allows the monitors such drastic range of motion so that when I'm not sitting at my desk, I can slide the monitors over and still view what's on my screens. I'll often remote into the office and have many remote sessions up on multiple monitors, but all I'll have to do is keep an eye on progress bars and ensure no prompts appear. When I'm sitting at the desk, I'd like to slide the monitors back to the center so that I'm the only person who can see what I'm doing. With the monitors in the center position, the door to my room is directly in front of them and my bed is off to the left. With the monitors slid all the way to the right, I can be on my bed and watch TV and also have a perfect viewing angle of whatever is happening on my monitors. I could also slide the monitors over to show people on my bed (which doubles as a place for people to sit when they're playing xbox) whatever is on the screen. So, the idea might seem a bit extreme, but just because of the layout in my room, it works quite well...
