Not saying I plan to get this, but I think it's worth mentioning that Batman: Arkham Asylum has a GOTY edition out in Europe, and coming to the US in a month or so. From what I understand, it includes DLC packs formerly exclusive to consoles (but sadly, no Joker missions from the PS3 version), and also supports a red/cyan analglyph 3D mode, glasses included, that works on any monitor, and has some bonus missions designed with this 3D mode in mind.

I remember a time when GOTY was only used for GOTYs. Same with the "whatever Editions."

Now most anything that has extensive DLC post PC-release seems to get another version of some sort down the line. Or two. Or three. :?

Then there are the crappy GOTYs which ship the original game with the latest patch and some multiplayer maps which are free anyway.

I don't. I think the first "GOTY edition" I ever picked up was for Half-Life, which actually is serious GOTY material, but as you say, was a crappy GOTY that included the original game, the latest patch, and multiplayer maps which were free anyway. And Team Fortress Classic, which is also free anyway, if you bought any retail version of the game (doesn't apply to buying the Steam version).

But the second GOTY edition I got was Homeworld, not long afterwards. I'm pretty sure EVERYONE thought Deus Ex was by far the better game that year. This one included a soundtrack and hint book.

Good one, definitely.

I don't think Deus Ex, Homeworld and Half-Life should be up there though. I doubt you can buy any of them anymore. Even so I don't think that they 'fit' personally with modern GotY editions like you were talking about (basically just including the paid DLC for no extra charge)

No One Lives Forever is a good one. They added a whole new chapter, exclusive to the GOTY edition.

Added.

For everyone who is just reading, this is for games that will most likely come out with a GotY edition (with DLC's and expansions along side).

That being said, I think that these two should be removed, you probably cannot even buy the regular versions anymore, and your happily forced to buy the GOTY edition.
No One Lives Forever
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

A second list for past GOTY editions worth buying over the standard edition would be nice for all of this stuff though.

Actually, NOLF GOTY is fairly rare. I would bet most fans of the game aren't aware it exists.

Not actually called "GOTY," but along similar lines, Thief: The Dark Project was re-released as Thief Gold with three new missions, and many tweaks to the old missions (some of which are greatly expanded). Thief Gold is long abandoned, and tricky to find. Thief: The Dark Project on the other hand has been re-released multiple times, including as part of "Thief Collection" boxes, and through download services. All of these re-releases were *after* Thief Gold had came out, and not one of them actually uses it.

I said fairly rare. Not extremely rare. And if you can't buy it new, it's rarer than your last post makes it sound like you were assuming. Plus, there's no guarantee that any of those used copies are of the GOTY edition. I personally bought and returned two copies of the game from Amazon marketplace that turned out to be just regular NOLF, until I found a copy on eBay that had pictures.

I'll keep both of them on the list for now, as both can still be bought at certain online and local retailers.
