Actually, the 10 year old game on PC was spelled with an S too. Alien Vs Predator is 16 years old, and was only released on the Atari Jaguar.

++++Checks steam acct for avp classic 2000+++, man you are right... all these years I been calling it wrong!

The singleplayer marine campaign is awesome.

AWESOME!

But it is awesome in respect to: "hey kids, do you want an FPS videogame that feels JUST like the middle hour of the movie Aliens? No innovation, nothing you wouldn't expect, but EXACTLY that done well? THIS IS THE GAME FOR YOU!"

That is the marine campaign. Extremely well done feel and tone to match the movie, compotently developed gameplay. Console port-ness is not bad in my experience, perfect mouse control and very nice textures and HUD. Widescreen is perfect.

Aliens and Predator campaigns I have not played yet, but I hear the Alien one is great if you can get the controls (which were in the demo) and the Predator campaign is the weak link with some cumbersome stealth. I can report back when I try those if you like.

OK some one who's opinion I trust... very close to SOLD! IMO playing the marine is what it is all about, scary and hard. Some supporting evidence and I will be buying it.

Especially as I probably won't have much MP time... that'll be spent on BFBC2 :)

However I would like some more opinions, esp MP please. Cheers SV :cheers

One more comment:

A typical complaint in reviews is that the Alien AI sucks, they just run at you around the walls, but honestly what else should they do?

And when you shoot them they do that Aliens scream and it makes me all giddy.

What little I've played so far I've quite enjoyed.

I think AvP2 was better than this one, though.

AvP2 was a classic, esp the MP.

yeah AVP2 is like ... awesome, i fondly remember the amazing mp matches we had back in the days ...

back to topic, i'm done with the alien campaign now and i think i'm able to recommend that one 100%. it is really fun if you figured out the elements that make alien so great: hiding in shadows, attacking from the ceiling, killing off lights  , hissing every now and then and doing a lot of stealth kills
gonna try out some extensive mp next week, after i've finished "testing" the hell out of sc2.
hopefully the alien is as good as in previous games, always played the fast weak one from alien 3, harassing them predators

Not very far in the camaign, but I voted Ok/Ok. For a game whose inspiration is more Anderson's AvP than Cameron's AlienS, it's really not that bad. Not exactly a worthy AvP3, but all in all, a nice little "current-gen" AvP game.

A number of things about AvP remind me strongly of Clive Barker's Jericho:
-not the best PC FPS, but a satisfying shooter
-looks OK, neither overambitious nor bland
-complex actions are stupid one-key-triggered cinematics  (no QTE sequences though - relief!)
-the flaws, poor choices and general consolishness don't ruin the sheer fun
-nothing really new, but quite unique nonetheless
There's a little Riddick and Dark Messiah in there, too - but after all, these games re-used features present in AvP1&2.

MP (TDM) is ok too, not the unbalanced instant-kill fest I had feared anyway. I see no reason why it'd be a long-lasting success, but it sure is fun to play.
Solo Survivor mode is nice too, albeit minimal. It's all about the motion tracker, flashlight and glimpses of shrieking xenomorphs in muzzle flashes. I kinda like that.

The Steam pre-order "offer" just plain sucked btw. 50 bucks/euros/kidneys, a blue alien skin no one will notice, a copy of... Universe at War?! Get it on disc for half that price, you might like the game and certainly won't regret the exclusive BS...

Well I snapped and brought it, thanks guys. Only just started it on the marine to see how it looked. They got the atmos of the start of AvP1 right, it is almost a direct copy! However got 2 more nights of the BFBC2 BETA before I get into it, should cover me for the period between BETA and retail 25th Feb to 5th March :)
