Read Full Detailed Report - Need for Speed: Carbon

Need for Speed: Carbon is a sequel to last year's Need for Speed: Most Wanted. You play the same nameless character, having just escaped from Rockport with the insane Sgt. Cross on your tail. You total your car as he chases you, but just as he's about to nab you, a friend of yours steps in and pays him off. Now it's up to you help your friend battle for turf and get to the top of Palmont City's blacklist...err, street racing circle.

Believe it or not, this actually gets a D+. There are games that get it worse than this, but better than any of the ones graded F.

Also, the things you listed as "major unresolved issues" are actually "widescreen-related flaws." Except the last, one, which is just a "crappy programming-related flaw."

Also, this doesn't properly work with the EA Link version of NFS Carbon, at least the easily downloaded NFSCRes.exe without renaming the .exe back to NFSC.exe instead of NFSC_Link.exe making this patch unusable on-line but it works fine off-line.

Thanks for posting all the info you did though. The second portion which lists using that complicated program, Art Money's Hack, is very nice but that program is confusing as hell to use.

At least I can play the game in wide screen off-line :)

So, applying the hack breaks multiplayer? In that case, the grading changes a bit.

Calculated grade: D
Potential grade: D+

Major unresolved issues:
None

Minor unresolved issues:
Are 1920x1080 and 1920x1200 supported?

Summary of widescreen-related flaws:
Widescreen requires a hack.
Game is Vert-.
HUD and cutscenes are stretched.
Broken multiplayer.

Post subject:  1680x1050 Supported.

1680x1050 was supported for me for about 5 minutes, then it crashed. I tried running the game a second time and it crashed as soon as I clicked "Career". I've done the patch and everything correctly, and res is set at 640. Has anyone else experienced this?

EDIT: Did manage to get this screenie in, however I'm still having crashes.

As you can see, quite a large vertical cut, but hey, rather have that than a stretched view.

This is what I did to prevent all the crashing. I right clicked on nfsc launcher.exe and selected compatibility windows 2000. Ever since then, absolutely no more crashes. It seems as though they actually coded this game for Win2k.

Post subject:  NFSC 2560 x 1600 works fine for me :)

I've taken a screen shot but am not sure how you guys upload your photos on here as I've not used this forum before, anyway, I hope the info is helpful. I used the NFSC Res application and it worked fine, so far no crashes :)

If you would like the screen shot, someone email me at "reading dancer @ g mail dot com"

( remove the spaces and add the 1 DOT! )

Cheers,

Chris
