4 is the bare minimum : XY for the viewport (the image rendered) and XY for the presentation window (the surface displayed on the screen).

With the system below (rather old !), I can run at 1650x1080 smoothly with this kind of details :

I gave a try to DirectX Tweaker : a professional tool to hack directly into DirectX. So farn I didn't managed to force the viewport resolution (this is what should be done).

The trouble, as said Paradigm Shifter, is that DXTweaker is recognized by PunkBuster as a cheat and you might lose you ...

I tried the WR2 Honda Civic 2006 Demo and though it supported widescreen, the aspect ratio wasn't correct, objects were stretched horizontally even though there was 1:1 pixel mapping @ 1920x1200.
There's a thread somewhere to help you choose the correct setting to fix the aspect ratio.

World Racing 2 supports widescreen res right out the box.
There are 2 demos available so you can give it a try.

Heck also you know because your monitor doesnt change res when you alt tab back ;)

You can also fire the menu setup of your screen and most of them will display the signal parameters : height, width and refresh rate.

actually, its even easier than I thought : you can usr ArtMoney to always force the entry to a specified value.
That way, I can change display settings, like geometry details without having to go back to ArtMoney : it stayed in 1680x1050.

Sorry, for the previously broken images, my personnal server had lost his WiFi connection to my router and my playing rig is wired to the server, with an alias in the hosts file to direct me to the local IP of the server. So I can not spot if the server external connection is up or down.

Anyway ...

The same with full settings (I mean the max for a GF4600... half the settings like FSAA and shadows are not availables).

But with those settings, I'm around 5FPS :P, while with previous settings I was around 30FPS, and 45FPS ...

Sorry for the low quality setup in which I play but I have only a GF4600 with my 2005FPW. This is still really playable.

Before hanging around with a hex editor, you have to decrypt the exe file. So far, the exe was decrypted by advanced cracking teams to patch the game to allow the distribution of pirated version.
Now, the encrypt/security agains piracy inside the game can be defeated without decrypting the exe ...

You know what the b**ch of it is? These games support 1080p on consoles, which by all definitions is widescreen. They're just bums.Actually, as the hack prooves it, supporting widescreen can be done just by adding the correct resolutions to the list of supported resolutions.

UNIWS works the following way for NFS games : spot where the screen res is stored (need a hacker to do this) and replace the 640x480 res description with your custom res.
