Darkstone on newer systems
Darkstone on newer systems
Hello everyone first time poster here, just found this site by accident, what a fantastic and helpful site! thumps up.
So here goes.
I can't find any entry for an old favorite of mine; Darkstone (stamped as a "diablo clone" back in 1999) from Delphine Software. It's one of those games thats saved even today by its great 3D engine (don't know the name sorry) giving the player full control over camera unlike blizzards masterpieces.
The problem with this old game - as you might have guessed - is firstly the aspect ratio of 4:3 but the resolution in general, the game is stuck with the 640x480 resolution it's born with. The gameplay is not ruined by any means be course of this constraint, but if anyone could spare a few minutes and look into the possibilities of enhancing the game it would be greatly appreciated.
I might be asking the impossible here(not a programmer by any stretch), and if nothing can be done, at least i have put the question out there.
regards --Mow_neo
btw. If you need info or indeed the whole game ISO, visit "darkstone database" (google it) most of the stuff from the community is over there as well.

Re: Darkstone on newer systems
Wow that was fast(!)
Initial impressions are fantastic, the game is looking much sharper and better proportioned then before, big thanks!
This does indeed - as you are aware of - come with a few odd behaviors, most noticeably the enormous black area when calling up the inventory screen as show below:

This gives you 320 pixels worth of screen real estate + the tiny inventory part, it does look funny though
Black landmass or not I can certainly adjust, however i might have overstepped my resolution boundaries here, as some text is very small to my eyes at least.
Be course of this, and be course of the short time it took for you to respond with a working 1080p version of the .exe file, I'm no too ashamed to ask if you have a version with 1280x720 resolution also? this seems like a good middle ground for improving quality and maintaining the correct aspect ratio, - without going overboard.
If not, thats also okay.

Fix for inventory requires a lot of fixes in the code, it will take a lot of time.

Subscribing to Eraser's request for a 1280x1024 version. I don't care about the inventory bug. Thank you

Re: Darkstone on newer systems
How can i use the resolutions in steam ?
Re: Darkstone on newer systems
Any update on this for fixes with the inventory menus and such?
Also, would be nice to know exactly what's being edited so we can create our own custom resolutions.

Re: Darkstone on newer systems
Again? This thing again? Jackfuste drops random .exes and people line up with random WS resolution requests. Exactly what Jackfuste did in Total Immersion Racing. If he goes to sleep, the game is forgotten forever. If he is bored, the game is forgotten forever. If he is offline, the game is forgotten forever.
Anyone willing to end this travesty and let us know how to hexedit an .exe file? Darkstone, Total Immersion Racing, etc. This is not a begging site, this is a site for widescreen editing for games. What is anyone doing for these games apart from dropping random .exes and NOT GIVING EDITING INSTRUCTIONS?
Pathetic. Plain pathetic.

I can remember three different occasions when somebody wrote up a tutorial on hex editing .exe files. You clearly didn't search hard enough to find them.

Because we all know writing SPECIFIC hex editing instructions for a SPECIFIC game in its own SPECIFIC forum thread is a chore, yeah? No, let me guess, we can just wait jackfuste to hand out .exes like charity instead for someone to point out hex addresses and hex values for users to edit themselves.
What if someone has the wrong .exe (US/EURO/JP)? What if someone posts his cracked .exe instead of a legit one? What if someone posts an unpatched .exe instead of the most recent one? Oh, no, let's continue to hand out random .exes to the people.
Sounds really absurd right? Good luck filling random game forum threads with random WS exes and people begging for their own WS resolution of ambiguous exe versions.
Re: Darkstone on newer systems
If you continue like this... Wouldn't it be better to create a patcher instead? Simply input game.exe and desired resolution and creates a patched game.exe

We gonna send it to outa space!
Re: Darkstone on newer systems
I created more resolutions - here is the DR --> http://www.wsgf.org/dr/darkstone/en
If you want to create different resolutions just compare two EXEs in a HEX Editor and change the Values.

I have updated the report with hex editing steps (using the 1920x1080 executable as a base).
