Hello! I'm a new member at wsgf, and have a very little experience with multidisplay setups. So I have a question for the multidisplay wizards here:

We have a display wall with 12 LG Flatron 55WV70MD-B displays each capable of a resolution of 1920x1080 @ 60hz in a 4 x 3 setup. They have a built in wall feature but the max resolution we can get out of it is 1920x1080 which sucks since we would like the full resolution i.e. 7680x3240.

Now we also have a V9800 GPU. I would like to know if we could drive all these displays using 6 Matrox Dualhead2go controllers and the single V9800?

Also we are open to using a multi GPU AMD setup i.e 2 V9800 GPUs but from the information I have gathered, I think we would need to use some kind of middleware to sync the two cards since AMD does not support it natively like the Nvidia Mosaic, am I right? Ideally we do not want to use any middleware as it may interfere with the applications we run, that's why the thought of the single V9800 and 6 matrox controllers.

We would be running windows 7 on the wall and other applications within windows such as Unity3D, UDK, and many others.

Other suggestions are welcome

Hi

I'm not entirely sure about that 12Monitor setup, iirc AMD gaming GPUs only support up to 6Monitors in Eyefinity, but I think I heard somewhere that FirePro GPUs are able to do 12 Monitors.

There might be a way with the DP-Dual HDMI adapter and then create a 2x3 Setup instead of a 4x3 (Both HDMI outputs are seen as one Monitor iirc....)

But maybe someone else with more knowledge about the professional sector can answer your questions better!

The LG Flatron 55WV70MD-B are very nice displays, the V9800 uses the same 'Cypress' chipset as the ATI5870E6 card, the chipset is limited to displayport 1.1a outputs, thus a maximum bandwidth of 8.64Gbit/s (360 MHz) for each DP output.

There are a few ways of doing this...

[A]
According to http://www.amd.com/Documents/AMD_FirePr ... utions.pdf it is also possible to drive 12 displays using 2x FirePro cards, NOTE the PDF states the use of 2x W9000, however the same may be achieved with 2x V9800's.

[B1]
6x Matrox Dual-Head2Go (1920x1080@60hz for each connected display).

[B2]
6x Startech Dual-HDMI spanned output (1920x1080@60hz for each connected display) - has a few less features but can be purchased for half the price of the matrox DH2G devices.

This will allow you to run each of the 12 display at the native resolution and refresh rate, using the Matrox-DH2G or Startech to span 2 monitors as 1 setup as follows:

[ 1a ][ 1b ] [ 4a ][ 4b ]

[ 2a ][ 2b ] [ 5a ][ 5b ]

[ 3a ][ 3b ] [ 6a ][ 6b ]

You would then create a 2x3 eyefinty group, thus creating a SLS over the 12 displays.
Note, only the FirePro cards are able to create a 2x3 group, consumer eyefinity cards do not.

Given that you are looking to drive 3D applications at a large resolution a single V9800 will be seriously pushing it for any detailed 3D use, additional horsepower by crossfire with another V9800 would be recommended, for playback of video files a single card would be fine.

Personally I would look at investing in another V9800 and connecting up the 12 displays to see what display grouping options I have and how it behaves and performs, looking into options B1 and B2 if there any issues, knowing I have a 2nd card to provide enough render power.

I haven't heard that a single FirePro can do 12 dislpays but I have heard that they support a resolution of 7680x3200. But I have heard that you can use two FirePro GPUs to drive 12 displays but AMD does not have any driver to create a single SLS with two cards, I would need to purchase some sort of middleware to do that. Anyway thanks for your input.

I came across that doc too, but an AMD engineer said that we would need some third party middleware (e.g. vizrt) and we would need an S400 sync card. He said that two cards would create 2 SLS groups but the groups would not be combined/synced and AMD doesn't have a tool/driver to do the combination a the moment.

I was thinking about going with your option [B1] or [B2] (I haven't heard of the Startech Dual-HDMI spanned output, thanks)
We already have a second V9800

so the additional horsepower required is available!

The only thing that worries me is if each diplayport can support 3840x1080 @ 60hz.

Ahh, I was unsure about the need for the sync card, thanks for confirming.

3840x1080@60hz 24bit = 5.97Gbit/s (248.83MHz)

So you have plenty of bandwidth to drive 2 1080p displays from a single DP1.1 output.

best way to 12-display videowall

2x matrox m9138 (or one m9188)

+ 6x dp @ dual hdmi adapters

No flickering, no problems with active connectors.

are you saying for anybody who wants to set up beyond 6 monitors consumer cards wouldn't work?

I'd like to set up a 2x5 setup How would I go about that?
the setup attempt i'm trying to do is

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all you help and inputs

I finally managed to setup the display with the matrox DualHead2Go controllers. We are now running at the maximum possible resolution i.e. 7680x3240. I will list the config just fyi:

12 x LG Flatron Displays
6 x Matrox DualHead2Go
1 x AMD FirePro V9800 (I will add a second one in crossfire mode)
