Extended displays require active adapters?

Post by malice95 »

I am planning on running two VisionTek 7750 Eye 6 2GB DDR5 PCI Express Graphics Cards
in my PC to support 10 monitors in an extended desktop mode (for a stock trading station).
These cards have 6 mini displayport connectors on them.

I am thinking about buying a 1920x1080 monitor that has DVI-D and VGA input. Its pretty inexpensive.
Dell Computer E-Series E2414Hr 24-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor

Can I run DVI-D monitors in an extended desktop mode with this card? Will I need active adapters
or will the cheap passive ones work? I don't plan using the Eyefinity features.. just a large extended desktop
across all 10 monitors.

Thanks,
Mike

Theoretically running 2 Eye 6 cards would say you can use up to 12 monitors, But as I have never tried more than 3 I can't confirm that. But if not using Eyefinity at al,l you will be able to get away with Passive adapters no problem, for extended.

One eyefinity6 card can operate 2x dvi/vga monitors with passive adapters - for rest of them (4) you need active adapters

IF you want make extended desktop (one big surface/big resolution) is only possible for max 6 monitors (one card)
if you want use two cards it will be possible as well but then you need to use software (ultramon or sth like that)

*extended desktop for 8 OR 12 monitors (one e6 card + 4 or 6 dp @ dual hdmi adapter) then you can do 4x2 or 6x2 config
