Looking to go 5x1 (+1 external if possible)

Greetings,
My usually very qualified campus rep isn't up to speed with the whole eyefinity concept.
I'm redoing computer setup and I would like to mix things up a bit. Although this is mainly a work at home machine, it would be nice to game once in a while too.
I originally wanted to go with a 3x2 layout but since there seems to be a fix out for 5x1, I'd like to go down that path.
If at all possible, since my LCD TV would be on the other side of the wall, I wouldn't hate being able to drive it as an external, to avoid buying an HTPC. This isn't a priority, but would be a nice touch.
I have a 5770 right now, but the output configuration is HDMI/DVI/VGA, no DP. I'm guessing this is going to be an issue, so either I'll have to replace it or use it with a second card, perhaps a 5770 FLEX.
I'm also unsure what monitors to go with, I like the ASUS VE247H, but I'm starting to think I might as well just say fuck it and go with a rack of VE276Q's driven by a purpose built card, but I'd like to stay as close to 1000$ as possible, within reason.
Any suggested config
Sorry for the noob question, I've been reading up but I'm confused.
Thanks in advance!
