I don't like having eyefinity running most of the time, and I use extended desktop with 2/3 monitors. But is there a way to tell windows to extend the background rather than have it repeat on each monitor?

Try out John's Background Switcher. Nice little app.

I capture triplewide screenshots in games, then use them with UltraMon to span three monitors...you can also use a script they have on the UltraMon site to rotate the wallpaper every X minutes...

Update: Just tried John's Background Switcher, nice app! and much easier to set up then the UltraMon scripts, will try it out and thanks.

John's Background Switcher is great! Unfortunately the windows theme I had only contained pictures of 19x12. Guess its time to find some super high res backgrounds. Any suggestions for that?

You might want to try DisplayFusion also. Similiar to UltraMon, but with more options for Wallpaper Settings. Plus, there is a freeware version of it, too.

Both Ultramon and Display Fusion should work fine and give you a bunch of other handy features.

I like Display Fusion a bit more.

I'm surprised that the following info isn't mentioned more in the desktop wallpaper discussions:

If you want to span an image across all of your monitors, this works as long as the resolution is equal to the total you have available: Just choose "Tile" in the wallpaper options in Windows 7 (this works in XP and Vista as well). No extra software needed.

Example: I have 3 27" Asus LCD monitors with a res of 1920x1080. If I have a wallpaper with the exact res of 5760x1080, then I can set it as my wallpaper and choose "Tile" as the Position option, and it will perfectly span it across all my screens with no stretching or distortion of any kind. This works in nVidia Surround as well.

Last time I checked, the "tile" option really only works if your main monitor is the left one. Otherwise the wallpaper "starts" on the main monitor and wraps from the right side over to the left.

+1 for tile mode, however I have a macro script setup in paintshop pro to take the far left 3rd of the image and stick it to the far right.

The image then displays perfectly for me.
When im running in eyefinity mode, the picture does look a little od and you can see the cut... but when im running in eyefinity mode, it is to play games, which run fullscreen so im not paying any attention to the background image.

Good point, but I tend to keep my left monitor as my main one anyway, so I've not minded the requirement for this to work. What bothers me is that it moves the monitors around when I enable/disable Surround mode. Why can't it just keep them in the same order as what I had them in previously!?
