Googled for it and found this site but cannot find the solution.
Hi all,

I recently upgraded my PC to a widescreen TFT. The problem is I want to run some older games on the system. I am wondering if there are any utilities to crop the the display on the sides to retain the aspect ratio, similiary to cropping to letter box size for movies..

I noticed that the video players can perform this when playing non-widescreen DVDs but I like to know if there any utilities to do this for some of the older games ?

We call it Pillarboxing. You need to set your video drivers and/or your monitor scaling for "Aspect Scaling". Here is an article on it.

"Cropping" isn't quite the right word. Literally, it means cutting off part of a photograph so it fits a frame better, so for games, it would imply cutting the top and bottom off of the 4:3 frame to make it fit widescreen.

Note that in order to pillarbox, you must be using a DVI cable. Otherwise the options won't be available.
