After seeing the leaked DNF footage after it was canceled I was glad it is dead.
Another developer, a new focus... could be awesome.

Well I'm not as optimistic as Mr. Velvet. If anythign, I too, would expect someone else to pick it up and finish it. But I wouldn't expect anything worthwhile. But it'd be nice, as I've always found the Duke game to be pretty entertaining.
By now, the 3dRealms folks may be selling game assets for food.

Certainly telling how little interest this latest rumor got in the cyberworld
Re: Oh no... another Duke Nukem rumor....
A pic on Facebook with a ton of motion blur. Pffffff...
Last I heard 3D Realms was still wrangling with Take Two over the DN IP. Considering all the money the publisher sank into ol' Duke I imagine they have a good chance to get the IP in the end, or at least some licenses from it.
Take Two has been pumping money into 3D Realms since 2000 for DNF. The results: some crappy spinoffs and some DNF content that could be worthless at this point.
I really could care less at this point.

Due to lack of funding, however, we are saddened to confirm that we let the Duke Nukem Forever (DNF) development team go on May 6,... While 3DR is a much smaller studio now, we will continue to operate as a company and continue to licence and co-create games based upon the Duke Nukem franchise. ... Take-Two’s proposal was unacceptable to 3DR for many reasons, including no upfront money, no guarantee minimum payment, and no guarantee to complete the DNF game. ...we viewed Take-Two as trying to acquire the Duke Nukem franchise in a “fire sale.” ...we believe Take-Two’s lawsuit is without merit and merely a bully tactic to obtain ownership of the Duke Nukem franchise. We will vigorously defend ourselves against this publisher."

what pumping are you talking about?
but there was another new rumor floating around that Gearbox will be working on it

George Boussard have not commented.
Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford declined to comment to Kotaku on the matter, indicating that he may be able to better clarify the situation further at this year's Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle.

dammit, I am so hyped up, there better be some real DNF news incoming
Take-Two never paid 3DR advances or any signing bonus or any other funds related to DNF, up until July 2008, at which time they paid $2.5m in connection with another agreement for an unannounced game. This is the sum total Take-Two has paid 3DR in connection with DNF. Take-Two claims that they paid $12m to GT Interactive/Infogrames to acquire the publishing rights for the DNF game. To be clear, 3DR was not a party to that transaction and did not receive any money from it. When the DNF game was originally signed with GT Interactive in 1998, GT paid 3DR a $400,000 signing bonus. Up until July 2008, this was the only publisher money we received for the DNF game. Meanwhile, 3DR put over $20m into the production of DNF.

Saying 3D Realms was a mistake but Take Two has sunk millions into getting DNF.
I have major doubts that the game will be anything special at this point.

Re: Oh no... another Duke Nukem rumor....
"Clearly the game hadn't been finished at 3D Realms but a lot of content had been created," Gearbox's Randy Pitchford told the Wall Street Journal. "The approach and investment and process at 3D Realms didn't quite make it and it cracked at the end. With Gearbox Software we brought all those pieces together. It's the game it was meant to be."
I wonder how much content Gearbox really used.

Yes. Word was the game was near completion, it just played like a series of episodes rather than one narrative. If Gearbox have had it for a year already and it's not due for at least six months, I imagine they will add a lot to it, but not recreate the game.
Most previews say it looks current anyway, so it's all good. I am looking forward to this very much.

Re: Oh no... another Duke Nukem rumor....
Well, have to say, after Borderlands, I've lost confidence in gearbox. Although I'll probably end up getting DNF either fairly soon after release if it's a reasonable price, or when it's cheaper (if it's not a reasonable price). I still have an old PC Gamer UK from Feb 1997 which states proudly in the back: "In the Next Issue: Full Review: Duke Nukem Forever!"

Re: Oh no... another Duke Nukem rumor....
I thought Borderlands was fine for what it wanted to be... as a Diablo of shooters it pretty much was a 100% success, though full voice acting in 2009 should have been a requirement.
Unless you meant as a PC port you lost confidence, which I could agree with. I still can't run the damn game smoothly with dynamic shadows on, and the menus are cumbersome. Still, neither of those things ruin the game in my opinion.

yeh, I think borderlands was awesome, especially in coop
It seems Gearbox mostly used the content created by 3D Realms, heck lots of 3D Realms employees even continued to work on it after the shutdown of the studio.

well, it seems more like Gearbox just ported this to 360 and ps3, the pc version was almost completed by ex 3drealms and Triptych Games

I started an eyefinity lobbying thread on the gearbox forums, feel free to drop by and give it a push ;)
