Approve a post (not the user)
another suggestion for the forum that I thought of once it's upgraded
maybe the ability to approve a single post ("+1" it)
and view the total number of approbation a single post received could be helpful in this forum
for example a guy says : "this solution works"
3 other persons click "+1" and then when someone else view the thread he knows that at least 4 persons got it working.
Just a thought though, discuss or do whatever you want with it.
PS: of course that's for the future, after upgrading the forum...

Isn't that something like the "thank this person" option? I believe that's a standard feature of phpbb3.

yeah it's something along this line, I wasn't aware that it's a standard feature of phpbb3... (if that is really the case)
though I prefer to use the term "approbation" rather than "just a thanks"
because it applies to more things
you don't thank a person which has the same problem as you with no solution if you see what I mean.

Reputation systems are nice, as long as people with high reps don't act like mods.

that wasn't at all what I had in mind
and I think User Reputation brings nothing to the table after having experienced it in Rage3D.com ...
the main point is the "NOT per user, but per post"
example:
you "thank" or "give +1" to a post, and this specific post displays that it has been approved one more time... no user "score" is kept ...

A 'Post' score I'd be more in favour of than a rep system, to be honest. The only forum I've seen where rep isn't used as a form of one-upmanship is OCN.

Ah, a lot of blog comment systems do that.
I wouldn't be opposed to it.

As long as you cant give negative 'points' I feel that its great. It creates an incentive to help out.

I don't really see how this would differ from giving a person points. Posts are not anonymous after all.
Then again, everyone may just ignore the scores if they object anyway. It's not like there are any actual consequences ;)

It differs because someone can come up with a helpful post, but overall be an unhelpful person.

Sounds like integrating Digg would do the job. It would also bring the post out to the world.

That's not really trivial.

it differs because a "person points" are immediately visible and whereas they should be used to give someone an overall "rating" it is in most case abused, and people tend to battle over who has the best rep and this gives moderator more work .... (not even considering how partial it is to try to give a single rating to apprehend someone's value)
on the other hand, a "per post score" (with nothing kept in the user profile) only means something on a single post, while it can be abused, any kind of abuse is mitigated by its very small scale, only people reading this particular post will see the "score".

More of a "Thanks" system - if a post has helped you fix a problem, you can thank the person. ;)
