Does 5040x1050 work in GAMES under Vista x64?

I've got 5040x1050 working on my desktop via the custom res feature of the Nvidia drivers (180.48 ), but:

1. GXM zaps my custom res (the 5040x1050 one) upon every bootup. Deleting GXM fixes it, but then I lose my bezel mgmt. :(

2. 5040x1050 is still not selectable as a res in ANY game :(

If *anyone* has been able to get 5040x1050 working in GAMES under Vista x64, please post up how you did it!

PS - the 180.48 drivers totally rock. My Crysis Warhead performance went way up with Tri-SLI.

As per the other thread...

Have you replicated my GXM modes list?
List what games you tried and if you have edited inis or command line or simply hoping the res appearing (which likely isnt going to happen).
Got the TripleHead2Go monitor driver loaded and unticked the "hide modes the display does not support button"?
180.70 drivers have replaced the 180.48 as of yesterday.

Have you tried the 177.41 driver, which works with the GXM utility out of the box with 5040x1050. If you have all the same issues with that driver then something else is at fault. Remember to remove and reinstall GXM.

OK, all good suggestions. I'm loathe to update the driver since this one made such a huge improvement. Guess it's time for a system restore point.

Anyway, I'll try each one of those suggestions.

In Warhead, I launched using the command line options to specify DX9 and 5040x1050, which resulted in 3840x800 again.

One very important thing: does your GXM utility erase your 5040x1050 custom res after a reboot? I really like the higher res for the desktop. If I could game at 3840 and do work (yeah, right) at 5040 - it would be a good interim measure anyway.

So, to recap, I will:
1. Update driver to 180.70, reboot
2. Uninstall GXM, reboot
3. Set up Custom res 5040
4. Install GXM, reboot
5. Use sys.cfg to get Crysis to do 5040.
6. Report results back here.

Thanks again, and please check back here for results. I really want to get this solved and then do a good writeup for everyone.

OK, I now have 5040x1050 AND Bezel mgmt. under Vista x64.

I thought about demanding to be made an Insider for the 5 hr process it took to figure this out (from 11pm to 4am!!), but then decided to be generous

Here's what you do.

1. Set up the 5040 custom res
2. Install GXM...reboot
3. You'll lose the 5040 as always.
4. Copy (not move) the install folder of the GXM (c:program files (x86)matrox graphics incpowerdesk se) to anywhere you like.
5. If you want bezel mgmt., go in there and set it up now.
6. Uninstall the GXM...reboot
7. You should be able to select 5040x1050 now (no need to set it up again - it should still be there).
8. Launch "Matrox.PowerDesk SE.exe" from the folder that you copied in step 4.

OK - now you can have your cake and eat it too. You will get your 5040 res back (due to the fact you set it up in step 1). And your "Matrox.PowerDesk SE.exe" (AKA GXM) will give you bezel mgmt. AND all games I've tried can "see" the 5040 res from within their menu's - no need to edit .ini's and crap.

One prob - after you uninstall the GXM, you can't get to the bezel mgmt setup anymore. BUT - if you set up a hotkey combo in step 5, it still works! Weird!

Clearly, something is being installed along with the GXM that is f*cking things up. Not sure what it is, but using the above method, you get what you need: 5040x1050 and Bezel Mgmt.

Yay!!!!! :D :D :D :D

PS - I 1st tried stopping the Matrox Service (can't recall the exact name right now - it's obvious) and preventing it from loading. It didn't work (either way). Something is being installed besides the Service and the GXM itself that screws up the Nvidia cpl's Custom resolutions and replaces them with the list under "Edit Mode List" in the GXM (which still does not include anything better than 3840x800).

Makes sense. That'd explain why GXM Setup keeps reporting higher resolutions as "not compatible with the system". The list of resolutions in Windows' Display Properties also changes depending of GXM being installed or not.

I don't suppose Bezel Management is fixed with your technique however, uh ? (broken picture on the left screen past a certain value)

I suspect the Bezel Management issue is a timing problem (running at max as it is) as it doesnt happen in 4320x900.

If you want an elegant fix for the GXM reseting res issue (and not adding 5040), look at DeviceInfo.ini in your Powerdesk install folder. All the hack Matrox use to gain support on both nVidia and ATI are there in the form of Reg entries... which is also why the 180 series dont work, the reg key changed slightly.

Would take someone at Matrox 2min to correct that, as we have proven the actual 5040 res is functioning as it always did.

Edit: Made up a dirty kludge to fix the resetting issue, see here:

Only at 5040 do I have the problem with bezel mgmt. you mention. So I suspect it is a timing issue (maybe due to the oddball 57mhz?).

And Yes - it is pretty ridiculous that we managed to beat Matrox to a solution. I'm an overworked USAF doc with very little spare time and no formal training in this stuff.

They really really need to raise the level of their game if they want to sell these things. And stop claiming that games like Bioshock work "out of the box" when, in fact, it's totally unplayable due to being hor-.

Sorry for getting a little OT, but I think it would be great if Matrox could just assign one engineer to manage the software side of this (potentially) great product. I'm sure they could fix these (likely) minor issues very quickly since, unlike us, they have access to exactly how everything works.

That having been said, playing GRID, Crysis and GTR2 in 5040x1050 pretty much justifies the investment :D

You realise triplehead2go support was added in patch 1.1? I realise that's not 'out of the box', but just checking...

Yep - I'm running the latest version courtesy of Steam. It's horribly HOR -.

I guess if you can stand walking around looking through a sniper scope - then it's OK. OTW, it sucks. Basically unplayable IMHO.

"Support" should mean more than "Boots Up".

Ah, I don't know about the steam version, but patch 1.1 was fine for TH2Go with the standalone game.

Bioshock "feels" Hor- in widescreen already, so maybe you're just fooled by the game's particular look & feel (currently playing in 16:10 and I can't say I love it). :? A better example of a so-called "surround-ready" game that actually looks like crap out of the box would be Doom3/Prey/Q4...

Hmmm. Well, it says 1.1 at the option screen. But, comparing it to my laptop (which has two 8800GTX's and so is reasonably comparable in general) which runs in 1920x1200 and is clearly much more playable due to the (relatively) increased FOV.

I'll take some screenies when I get home to show what I mean.

Again, the whole setup is worth it just because of the racing games I mentioned - it's so much more immersive.

But it really is a bit of a PITA in general. I'm going to go ahead and get a 30" for those games that don't work well. Right now I'm using an awesome Sony HDTV - but I'm a weirdo who likes to have the TV on in the background while I'm gaming. Must be ADHD or something

PS - anybody know of a good monitor arm setup that would work with a 30" monitor? I'd like to be able to swing it out of the way when I'm using the TH2Go. It'd be nice if it could somehow clamp to my desk. Man, I am way OT here!

Just because you have patched bioshock to 1.1 does not mean that it will be Hor+. You have to disable the FOV lock in the options menu. You might have done this but not mentioned it, but I figured it was worth mentioning because I had the same problem after patching.
