I'm looking to start hosting WS & Surround friendly gaming servers. Looking at the services out there, I am leaning towards Game Servers:

If you have any suggestions or recommendations for a service, and for games to host, please let me know. I'm interested in hosting 4-6 ~16 players games.

Certainly sounds like a good idea. Let's set up an event and see how many people will show. Also, can you post the relevant info (not sure what would be necessary) and I can post some info about the new server in the left nav.

Already have TF2 up on a private box.

Check your ping by adding homepc.cynagen.com:27016 to your favorites. It's a solid box, and it's on my home connection which just got the speed upped to 2mbps out, so it's more than enough to handle 16 players, and I never turn it off. So best part about this is, free.

Ouch, dood - I just got 2000ms latency.

But I'm at work, so their firewall might be shagging the latency.

I haven't checked it out yet, Ill do it later when I am on a PC that has Steam (another person has seized control of that PC)

Just a note. Copy pasting this address into xfire does not work. It only works in steam favorites.

100MS ping for me on cynas server

OK, it must have been the work firewall that was doing it. I get a (more reasonable) 187ms latency at home.

I couldn't join earlier because it said the server was unavailable. Most likely because I had to share bandwidth with a sibling streaming 20 episodes of Avatar over youtube. But now I get this:

I think I have had those in the past on mods when I forgot to apply patches...

Im pretty sure they mean one of you two is out of date so you aren't running the same server version and client side version.

TF2 is free this weekend for play.

We'll be hosting a game this Sunday as well, given the Friday game goes well... and i'll restart the server an hour before the game to make sure it's up to date.

Just tried to login (11:55 Central US) and got the 'Server is not responding..." message.

If it's on on Sunday, I'll try to drop by. :) I can be cannon fodder, if nothing else. :lol:

Cynagen, there was an update for the new Pyro achievements yesterday and I don't think the source dedicated server automatically updates, does it?

Doesn't, and I restarted the server once, 40 minutes before the event, and valve released ANOTHER update within that 40 minutes, so I had to restart again, which made the event 10 minutes late. However, the event was a complete and total success somehow... The server was always full of people no less than 10 for hours.

I logged in for a bit, and played a medic for a few matches. Got my ass handed to me, like always. My latency was between 60-110 the whole time.

TF2 is free this weekend for play.

Just went to the PC that has steam and kicked my sister off for a minute so TF2 is re downloading now as I am typing this, Ill probably not delete it from now on because they might have free weekends on every class release.

@Ibrin, Your PC can actually run TF2, mine lags graphically on just about lowest settings (all low at 800x600 (otherwise text is huge)) and I also get pings of 100 on most servers :P (Confirmed with parents and I will buy PC at end of summer (likely Laptop) so then I will be able to actually run games well :P)

Edit: TF2 is done downloading for the free weekend. It says 24 hours left so 4PM central time it will end for me, I seem to get pings between 90-120

Well, I played on the WSGF server for a short time earlier this afternoon, eZ` joined too and totally owned me. :lol: I lost count of the number of times I died, and only managed to get one guy once.

We did end up going to a 'noob friendly' server at his suggestion... but after two minutes of hearing others rant down microphones I got tired of it and went and did some cooking instead.

...and managed to set what I was grilling on fire... :oops:
