is there any (if possible freeware) DVD-player out there that can remove the horizontal black bars, that seem to belong to the movie.?

right now i'm using AVS-DVD andif i maximize the window theres still a bar on botton on on the top of the screen so the display area is middle monitor + 3 inch on the left & right ones each.

The same goes with other DVD-players.




any suggestions, help, etc. would be appreciated very much.

Zoom Player should fit your needs. It's highly customizable.

That's because the top/bottom black IS part of the image, poor widescreen encoding, same as most tv channels do with wide movies when they show em, the black bars are part of the encoded image.

You'll need a player to zoom in on the image all through playing it, I don't know of any that do so, though I never really played with zoom player, too buggy when I tried it.

An alternative to playing dvd's on your pc could be with a decent regular dvd player, a capture card, and a capture software/player that allows zoom. I've never been able to see the point in playing dvd's on a pc personnaly.

Mplayer for Windows gets my vote. I use this all the time now, with 1080p content. Works like a charm.

VLC is great when "it just needs to work", since it comes with its own built-in codecs for the most common formats. It is, however, not the best option when it comes to quality.

Agreed. But it's definitely worth a first-port-of-call in a testing or emergency scenario. ;) My vote goes to the K-Lite Codec Pack for other needs. ;)

Well, I tried a few other trailers, and I have to agree that it also depends on how the content was encoded. The trailer for 300 in 1080p I have has no black bars, and with Mplayer for Windows, fills as much as it should of the screen. However, some other trailers, and even Gladiator 1080p seems to have the black bars no matter what.

My first look would definitely be vlc and it's video wall settings. It does multiscreen slices and customized rendering.

i tried VLC before. I used deinterlace and cut to 221:100, so the black bars become smaller and the display area becomes wider, but this is not a good solution yet. I'll give Mplayer a try. lets see how it works.

Mplayer: I can't find a solution.
Zoom: I managed to get rid of the bottom bar, but now its back again.
