OK, my ten year old son made me a birthday card on a big sheet of construction paper with black permanent magic marker (Sharpie) and leaned the "card" up against my one-month old 2405FPW. It wasn't dry yet.

Thankfully, there as only one spot left on the monitor. Dead center about the size of a grain of rice. You can imagine my shock and surprise. I took some 90% alcohol and a Q-Tip to it. It came right off (thank God).

Thought I would post here with this fix in case it ever happens to anyone else. I know I was sweating bullets thinking that I had an eyesore for the next 6 years and would see it everytime I used this monitor. The alcohol not only took it off, but it didn't hurt the LCD finish either. After I got the marker out I used some iKlear Apple Polish purchased at The Apple Store and it is good as new!

It was along the lines of WTF is THAT!!?!?! I also vaguely remember feeling my neck for a pulse.

A wiffle ball won't do them much good either. My 3 year old and I were having a little batting practice in the house. Now my 17 in LG has a crack in the screen from top to bottom. Oops Pooldoc

I bought a cheap (crap) laptop for taking to University... and even then some clever dick in the library thought it would be funny to flick pennies at it across the room to see if they could break something.

Holy Cow! I've read two threads about kids and these Widescreens. I have a 9 yearold nephew and just got a widescreen, and me an him are gonna have a serious talk next time he comes over. That will protect him from what I would do to him if he damaged it, and would protect me from going to jail! LOL :lol:

Seriously though, I'm glad everybody has found ways to fix these issues. It is amazing the damage a kid can unknowingly cause...believe me I've seen it. :shock:

A little "trick of the trade" I learnt many years ago to remove permanent marker from places it shouldn't be.

The most common place I used to encounter permanent markers was next to white boards at various Universities I regularly got seconded to by my employer.

Permanent markers would regularly get mixed up with erasable white board makers leading to many white boards sporting random splotches of permanent ink.

Various "black magic" voodoo suggestions used to be made about how to remove the permanent ink but the quickest (and cheapest) was to use the whiteboard markers themselves.

Just take an ordinary erasable whiteboard marker (any colour will do although using the same colour as the permanent ink might be best) and use it to draw all over the area marked by permanent ink, the chemicals in the erasable marker will mix with the permanent ink lifting it off the marked surface allowing you to just wipe it away.

Hope this helps any victims of the Phantom Marker Menaces.

PS: Please note, I have NEVER tried this on any sort of display system (CRT/LCD/Plasma/whatever) but I see no reason why it shouldn't work just as well as it does on whiteboards

What gives with the parenting? I have a 5 year old daughter and she won't go near my PC. Don't get me wrong, when she was younger, 2 years old or so, she absolutely destroyed my 32-inch Sony WEGA television that cost me $800 at the time. She was 2 years old though.

The idea I got from the story is that it was drawn on the table and then leaned up against the screen so he would see it. I just wasn't dry when it was put against the screen.

Dude chill out and slamming people's parenting and learn to read. He wrote a birthday card for dad and leaned it against the monitor for dad to "find". The card wasn't dry and left a spot on the monitor.

Is it so hard to read a post a couple of times and think about it before you jump in with a reply? :roll:

This works excellent, I dont suggest anyone attempt wrighting on their screen just to see if this works but if you are unfortunate enough to have it happen to you it works great!
