Oblivion Hyperthreading/Dual Core tweak

I found this bit of info on the official forums. I gave these tweaks a try and indeed did gain 5-10 FPS in the game. I am pretty sure that this is only going to net gains on multi-threaded compatible CPUs.

First off, these tweaks are for your Oblivion.ini file in "My DocumentsMy GamesOblivion" NOT the Oblivion.ini in the game directory.

Try changing these values:

[OPENMP]
iThreads=10
iOpenMPLevel=10

iPreloadSizeLimit=1000000000

I imagine you can test higher and lower values to try and tweak performance more, but I just did it exactly as stated above.

It would be a good idea to back up you Oblivion.ini file before fiddling just in case.

Apparently these tweaks were handed down from one of the developers.

Good luck and I hope it helps some of you!

I love games that are highly tweakable. :twisted:

I already tried this tweak ... thanks Gabbo ... 8)

Unfortunately it didn't help me get rid of the jumps/stutters ... :(

You've got jumps/stutters Paddy? That's not good. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that's not very good at all. Which system of yours are you playing it on?

The FX-60 ... the frame rates are fine but it jumps and stutters ... even if I drop the res right down ... :?

Tweakable is fine, but requiring you to make tweaks and hacks to get a decent performance is just lazyness on the developer's side.

I hope Bethesda's already working on a patch to make some tweaks for us.

I did the tweaks and didn't see an improvement at my normal settings so just for kicks I turned on distant land, trees, etc and suffered no drop in frame rates at all. Steady 30 - 50 indoors and out accept in the battle at the end of the Paradise level. I had a signifigant drop there for a few seconds.

Even if you max out the grass and tree distance?

Yeah ... but I do have the density of the grass tweaked down ... can't remember the setting in the config and I have just reinstalled windows so I don't have the game on the system at the moment ... :roll:

I had the same problem until i maxed everything out.. although it was much worse on my X2 compared to this processor.

I assume youve tried all the nvidia tweaks from the eldar scrolls forums already yeah? I hope they release a patch soon to fix all these issues people are having.

Yeah I have tried just about everything ... :roll: ... I hope they sort it out in a patch.

What do you recon to my textures ?
They don't really impact on fps but the game looks loads better ...

Yeah spooted the links earlier :wink:

Downloaded them ready, ill try them out tomorrow :) Your tweak looks pretty cool, cant wait to see the improvement it makes! Thats the only thing taking away from Oblivions beauty!

Oh, that and the fact, that where the textures are poor, the trees are also sprites :) I happened to notice cause i turned the details all the way down, and then even the trees in the foreground are sprits :)

I guess it would be very very difficult to render all those trees as full polygonal models.

Nah, it wouldn't be hard, but it would be absolute murder on framrates... ;)

Hi Guys ...
I finally got my game running without all the jumps and stutters ... 8)
Without lowering the quality... apart from the Grass Density ... and in some instances I was able to improve the image quality over and above the defaults ... :D
It took me a couple of hours of testing each variable ... but it was worth it in the end ... :lol:

Here is the Tweak Guide I used and the best Tweak Guide site out there ...
http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_1.html

There is info in there about Hyperthreading/Dual Core ... :wink:

I have a 6800GT. I found by turning everything OFF and everything else to their lowest setting, the game ran smoothly....... for the most part. :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry:

i'm gonna go play Far Cry... at least that stays above 15fps. :lol:

Nice link Paddy!

I really like that site. I didn;t know that ATI released a beta driver with Oblivion optimizations. HDR + AA now possible! Sweet!

Paddy, what tweaks did you find that made a substantial difference in terms of performance. I will try a lot of these out tonight (as well as the new driver), but I still would like to hear what you found that "works"

Careful with this tweak, as it can cause your character to get stuck in certain situations, and suddenly start jumping non-stop. It's hard to get out of it, and it's pretty annoying.

I'm not really sure/ can't rember ... I just went through them one by each time checking to see if it made much difference ... by the end it was a lot better ... 8) ... also I imagine it would be different for you as you have an ATI card.
