I purchashed this today and i found out that in the video options, there is widescreen resolutions avaliable. What i would like to know from the pros if this is just a zoomed in with the top and button cut off. or is the FOV correct for the aspect ratio
ive included a couple of screenshots to try and explain it...

1920 1200

1600 1200

what i did notice was that the Crosshair was slightly bigger in 1920 than 1600

oh yeah - i didnt bother putting any AA on yet as i wanted to see how the game ran normally without it

EDIT: screenshots changed to links as to not make the site design look bad.

Lucky! The game doesn't come out until tomorrow here in the US. Looks like a great game :D I was a big fan of the original and can't wait to play this one.

My completely unscientific observation of those shots - it looks like they may have implemented widescreen support. There's a bit of the top chopped off in the wide shot, but it looks like they do indeed expand the FOV to accomodate the widescreen resolution.

just my speculation, but i'll pick up the game tomorrow and let you guys know what i find.

Can anyone confirm that the PC version supports widescreen?

And if so, can you use 1152x648?

Thanks

It's kind of hard to tell if it is zoomed in with top and bottom cut off (like you said) in those screenshots because you took the screenshots in different locations in the game. It would be easier to tell if you stayed in the same spot and switched the resolution.

I have some game programming experience, and I can tell you that it makes no sense at all for anyone to make zoom the screen in and cut of top and bottom, especially in a First person shooter. It is just alot easier to allow normal widescreen, it actually isn't very hard at all for developers to add widescreen support to an FPS game, usually the only reason for leaving it out is if it's an older game or if they just forgot to put it in. So it's pretty safe to say that it is genuine widescreen support.

Ok! I went ahead and picked up the game after work. Just to get my feet wet again I played through the training campaign. During that time I took two screenshots, one @ 1600x1200 and one @ 1680x1050.

This is actually a good learning process for me as well. Learning to distinguish the different varieties widescreen form can take is an interesting process.

1600x1200

1680x1050

Comparing the two screenshots subjectively has led me to believe that yes, the game does implement genuine widescreen support. I base that conclusion on a couple things. The first thing is that the arm and gun (as seen from the 1st person perpective) maintains it's aspect ratio - there is no stretching or distorting of the image. Secondly, if you look to the right of the screen, near the bunker and mini-map you'll notice that genuinely more is added to the view and the bunker isn't fatter. Thirdly, if you look to the left you'll notice that the HUD retains its dimensions while more of the downed ship becomes viewable.

So there are my initial impressions. Hope they help. :D

What all resolutions does the game list in the menu? Does it just list exactly what you have listed in Windows or does the game have it's own list of supported resolutions?

Thanks.

It might list others if they are accessible in Windows... :)

I hope so! Out of that list, I can't do ANY of those widescreen resolutions. All I can do is either 1440x900 on my laptop or 1152x652 when having my laptop connected to my HDTV.

You got me curious.

I went ahead and added 1440x900 as a custom resolution on my desktop, and lo and behold it popped up in the BF 2 video options. :D

A little bump for anyone who is considering getting the game right now.

http://forums.lucasarts.com/thread.jspa?threadID=92438&tstart=0

It's got some problems. Well, a lot of them actually, so I would recommend waiting on this game at least until the first patch has been released.

I've had the same problem as those numerous people on the lucasarts forum: the game freezes absolutely randomly, for no reason at all, sometimes two minutes into the game, sometimes two hours, sometimes not at all.

What a piece of sh*t. There are so many people with different setups having this problem that it has to be a software problem, not hardware. Get with it Lucasarts! Don't release a broken game and no damn patch. This is ridiculous. I want my $50 back.

I've wanted my $50 back ever since Battlefront 1. In part one, there was no widescreen support what so ever (not even through editing the ini or through crack) AND they capped the frames-per-second in the multiplayer to 30fps only!

I hear ya, man. What burns me the most is my 'burning' (hehe) suspicion that this problem was widely known before release. As I mentioned on my post at the Lucasarts Forums, this game underwent extensive beta testing and was even available for premium users of File Planet to download and test out for themselves. If I remember correctly this went on for quite some time. It does also have a few limitations which I suspect are tied to its console brothers and sisters. The game browser for instance needs a serious upgrade.

I don't think we as consumers should have to spend our time troubleshooting problems like this. Hehe, we already spend enough time hacking our .ini files for widescreen.

I do believe that it is a cool, fun game though, so I will remain open to any fixes. For now I've got the game uninstalled, but I'm still in contact via email with Lucasarts tech support. They suggested updating my nvidia drivers to the latest 8194 set, so I may give that a try and see what happens.

Good game though. When it didn't crash, it ran wonderfully at 1920x1200. Its uninstalled at the moment and I'm waiting for a patch.

They'll fix it. Just a matter of '*&#@($!' WHEN.

Aloha to you too Funch. I try to get to Hilo whenever I can. :D

I've been having some initial success with the game. I reinstalled it on a lark and updated my Nvidia drivers to the 8194 series, taking care to disable my virus protection (AVG Anti-Virus) during installation.

I was pleasantly suprised to discover that the game has not frozen on my during single or multiplayer yet. I'll keep testing though, and let you guys know if anything odd turns up.

Just a little update for anyone who is following this thread. I've managed to play through a good deal of the single player campaign, as well as indulge in lots of multiplayer, with no apparent freezing or hang ups. So, it looks like so far so good, although I'd still recommend waiting for at least the first patch, for fixes and update to the multiplayer content.

For now though i'm a happy camper :D

Hehe, I was wondering that myself Paddy. Feel free to use the pics I posted in the screenshots forum. It really is a fun game - ground combat, vehicles and space (my favorite)! I sure hope they release a patch sometime soon, it would definitely enhance the whole package.
