guide for newbies?

Hey there,
I ended up taking the plunge on an Apple 23" LCD. I tried changing the resolution to these games in the config file from the posts on these boards but it didnt do anything when I went into the game to view it. Is there a guide anywhere that goes through the basics with someone new to a widescreen? Thanks!
