Proper FOV is subjective, start the game and see if it feels too close for you. I found FO3's FOV to be fine in 16:9.

subjective? That doesn't jive with everything else I've ever learned from this site. "proper" to me is based off the developer intended fov.

for the record, i just tested 4:3/16:10/16:9 and it seemed to only ever be changing the hor fov, so it would appear the game has native support and there isn't anything special I have to do beyond setting the correct rez?

so as so often happens, after reading 6 pages of arguments, I'm still not sure what I need to do to get the best widescreen experience on my 16:10 display.

just set the resolution in game and I'm golden? FOV is automatically corrected properly?

Yes. All you need to do is set the game to 16:10 and it will automatically be Hor- from the native 16:9. There are no tricks or edits you have to do. It's correct.

This site is often about subverting developer-intended FOV actually.

When I say subjective I mostly mean some people like an FOV of 65, some 80, some 95, etc. etc. even for the same ratios. It is not an exact science and the calculator we have here is a guide more than it is an exact science.

3D stuff is fine natively. If you care about getting the full FOV with 2D stuff, then you need to do some tweaking as described in the DR.

The rule about FOV is that there's a baseline AR, and a baseline FOV that looks best at that AR. This may vary from person to person, but whatever the corresponding AR/FOV is, when the AR increases above baseline, the horizontal FOV angle should increase with it, and the vertical FOV angle should stay the same. Fallout 3 does this already with 3D perspectives, but needs a fix for the 2D stuff if you care about being able to view all the greebling.

I use the usefull part of this thread to configure both ini files for 3840x1024.

Everything looks acceptable to me but:

When I get to a 2D scene (Specifically the baby book to set special strenghts at the beginning)
I see it fully (Now that I set the FOV in fallout.ini to 150) but the arrow doesn't respond to mouse click to change pages???

Am I alone with this ?

Anything I missed?

Thanks

The beginning parts with character creation and the baby book have big problems, there is keyboard shortcuts for pretty much everything; but you can save yourself a huge amount of headache if you just play these beginning parts in 1280x1024.

If their are alignment problems when changing the fov maybe we should remove the fov method for non-TH users. Thoughts?

I found the keys to go through while staying at my common resolution.

Thanks for the reply!

Excuse me but what exactly would those keys be for getting through the "Baby Book" section because I can't for the life of me find them.

If I remember well:
I used the arrow keys to flip the pages.
I made my selection on the last page using the mouse.
I use a key (A ?) to exit the book...

If you can't get through with this information, I could try back in the game...

I would like to contribute that I've tested the game extensively* on 2560x1600 and it plays wonderfully. The resolution was supported by the out-of-the-box version, and I noticed no glitches or anything.

I apologize for bumping this, but have been trying to play this again and one or two more issues.

Firstly, manually increasing the resolution to 6060x1080 has worked perfectly via the "isize=" line in fallout.ini and the fov is correct thanks to altering "fdefaultfov=" to 145.

These settings caused a few issues though...

1. HUD was not centered.
2. PipBoy could not be read due to blurriness
3. Terminals are too blurry to be read, and were far too zoomed in to exit.

Issue 1 was solved via editing the "isafe" lines. I found the values below to work well at 6060x1080 (bezel corrected).

Code: Select all

iSafeZoneXWide=925

   iSafeZoneYWide=15
   iSafeZoneX=925
   iSafeZoneY=15

Issue 2 was half-solved. I reduced the blurriness by settings "fBlurIntensityPipboy=" and "fBlurRadiusPipboy=" to zero. It is still somewhat difficult to read though, I wonder if there is a way to make it 100% readable. Any ideas?

Code: Select all

[Pipboy]

   fBlurRadiusPipboy=0
   fBlurIntensityPipboy=0
   fScanlineScalePipboy=50
   bEnableFlickerPipboy=1
   bUsePipboyMode=1

Issue 3 is also half solved. I managed to get the terminal to be visible in it's entirety on the screen by a simple edit of the "fRenderedTerminalFOV=" line to 0.25. The screen is still quite blurry though, and the cursor doesn't seem to match up to were your clicks actually happen.

Code: Select all

fRenderedTerminalFOV=0.25

I hope some of the above may be useful (in particular being able to adjust the HUD) and maybe someone else can help me fix all these blurry menus.

Anyone having trouble with the game crashing? Sometimes, can occur after 1 minute or 20 but my game always crashes :(
It looks like its freeing but nothing else happens and i have to ctrl + alt + delete because it stops responding. searched somewhat here but dident really find anything like this. Running the Uk version of the game i guess and latest patch :( Anyone else experiencing this?

I've had my share of crashes in the past. Generally patches have resolved most issues, but when that fails I find lowering some settings can reduce the frequency of crashes. If possible, try monitoring your memory usage (such as on a separate monitor) and see if it exceeds your installed memory.

Only other suggestion I can make is that you use quick-save frequently (F5 is the default key I believe).

And if you are using unoffical plugins all bets are off.

This sounds like a known issue from before with the multi-monitor users. You may want to check the F3 threads in that section of the site.

Try this...
