Very disappointed with lack of WS option

Post by HoodooGuru »

All I can say is-- I've been waiting for 20 years (yes, I've been playing games that long) for a game like BF2, and to find that it does NOT natively support WS (unlike HL2 which does) makes very VERY disappointed with the DICE/EA development decision makers.

I've also been waiting for years for a high quality, value-priced monitor like the Dell 2405FPW which finally has good coupon sales again (can be had for $899 today).

I will NOT be buying the 2405FPW today after all until BF2 releases a patch supporting WS. Though I do plan to pick up the 2405FPW come holiday time as it will certainly be cheaper by then (likely $699 with Dellf coupons). I can wait since Dice/EA seem to be doing as well.

Hmm...I just ordered this same monitor from Dell (2405) it hasn't shipped yet. Are you saying that even with a brand new fresh unaltered install of BF2 it won't even launch? With sz values of
1920 and 1200, the shortcut fix works but only for my 23" apple cinema
monitor which is same native res as your Dell 24". That is, other values
like 1680x1050 don't work, game won't launch, no error message.
Also, I have a 61" Samsung DLP TV wit 1280x720 native res.
On that monitor, the shortcut fix does not work, game won't launch,
go figure.

I have a 46" Samsung DLP and I have tried editing all combinations of the .con files and adding the string to the target in the shortcut and nothing works. I get a black screen then it crashes to desktop.

Very frustrating, and reason enough for me to not buy the game. Hell I can't get any res over 1024x768 and even with maxed AA and AF it still looks like trash.

GG DICE

we should petition to DICE or EA and refuse to by their products until they decide to accomodate widescreen users

Solutions are always in the Solutions forum. The Gaming or "discussion" forum is for people to work out issues before a hack is found, or after. The solution is found here:

Right click your shortcut on your desktop. Select properties. Change the Target.

It should look something like this.

"C:Program FilesEA GAMESBattlefield 2BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1680 +szy 1050

1680x1050 does not work, even if you right click and change the command line.

it works

Hi, it has probably been posted in these forums many times but once and for all I will clear up how to get battlefield 2 running in widescreen. I am using a 2005fpw with a radeon x800 xl.

The following line is what I use in the bf2 link on my desktop:

"D:GamesBattlefield 2 DemoBF2.exe" +menu 1 +widescreen 1 +szx 1680 +szy 1050

If you copy this bit:
+menu 1 +widescreen 1 +szx 1680 +szy 1050

and paste it over top of what is currently after the path on YOUR link, that should make the game run in widescreen. But then like everyone has pointed out, the fov is all screwed up, so......

navigate to your [Battlefield 2 Demomodsbf2Settings] folder and open up the file VideoDefault.con in notepad, and change the line that says:

renderer.fieldOfView 1

to

renderer.fieldOfView 1.1

and save and exit notepad, you should be all sorted with no fov issues!

If you try and run the game and you just get kicked back to the desktop, try reinstalling the game and then follow the steps I wrote above.

Doing this won't have any conflicts with punkbuster when you go to play online so it's all good.

What an excellent game, sad theres no proper widescreen (yet?)

Thanks for info about command line params.

I havent had a chance to play with fov but from what i hear from you all it sounds like they crop...

Heres what im (currently) doing as trade off... my monitor max res is 1920x1200... the 4:3 resolution would be 1600x1200 so i run 1760x1200 (exactly half the difference).. i added that resolution to nvidia custom resolutions and set scaling to fixed aspect ratio. I know this still sucks but its much less distracting than a 4:3 res or fully stretched image and is another option to add to arsenal of games that stretch.

If im wrong about the fov crop, let me know.. i hope a future patch fixes all this. In the meantime its still excellent game and its so real i usually forget about resolution issues (stretch not too noticably bad)
