At this point I would say the cost and setup hassle is on par with the Matrox Th2g.
I choose the ATI route just because I can game in native 1920x1200.
I guess you are right about matrox not haveing to worrytoo much.
If you are happy with 5040x1050 (assuming your monitor can support it, of not then at 4320x900) then I don't see any advantages to Eyefinity
Yes u can game in 6x or 24x monitor with eyefinity. but who here will really do that?
Matrox have better support since it works in Win xp and have bezel/windows managment in already.
I'm not gonna discount the exyefnitiy as it is still and have teething problems like everything else.. but I'm sure it will get better.
the only thing I want now from it is damn bezel managmement.

Im already playing at triple 1920 using SoftTH, my main reason to upgrade is the pain in the ass it is to setup games with it and the really small compatibility list it has.
Im gonna have to wait until i can buy a new 24" display with displayPort to upgrade, by that time, the 5870 should have some price drops.

so i couldnt sleep last night like a crackhead knowing my 3x 24" samsungs and 5870 arrive later today, i just got confirmation that my dell adapter arrives this thursday 10/1. in the meantime its th2g

bizlink/dell adapter SHOULD work.
Please let us know... and in that picture are they using a DVI to HDMI converter after converting from DisplayPort to DL-DVI?

The worst part is:
people outside the US have no chance of obtaining that Dell adapter.
So I'm basically screwed. My 5870 is on its way, my 3 screens sit here waiting.
And there is just no way I'm gonna put them to use.
Think I will have to sell my 5870 and get me a 4870x2 + TH2G.
I have never been a fanboy of any company but what ATI did with that Eyefinity technology just heavily pushed me to the nvidia side.

I dont' like that Dell 2408w screen. Awesome picture quality and connitivity but I perfer the fast response time and low input lag of my BenQ
and having 3 identical monitor is much nicer :)
Hope the Dell adapter works fine..
I'm keeping my fingers crossed and penis twisted

If anything as the cards are already on the market I wouldn't mind if ati just released their own adapter for something like >40 so we could snatch that up. In reality though I feel that they need a revision before releasing the 5870x2 and more unrealistically the 2gb model cards (I say unrealistically because I believe these cards are already manufactured and awaiting a release date) that would incorporate something to circumvent this issue entirely.
Also I purchased 3 asus 23' for this build and am quite sad that they will arrive and I will only be utilizing 2 of them. I expected that as I am using my 8800gtx until the 5870x2 hit market but still makes me sad that I will need to spend another $100 to utilize something I have already spent so much money on. My build was $3000 total including my accessories of course ;p "Keyboard I didn't need, mouse I didn't need, and a headset I didn't need lol" also all liquid cooled with a 480mm rad.

Wow this is pretty ridiculous, one monitor with display port cost as much as all 2 of my monitors put together 0.o
Well I found this dell here that's 199 with free shipping....but then I would have to send one of my 23' monitors back and my resolutions wouldn't line up...

Displayport-compatible screens needed for Eyefinity?
Thanks Dave, for the confirmation on XP (that Eyefinity isn't supported on XP, for those who weren't following). Oh well, at least it gives me 3 weeks to figure out what to do for the 2 side monitors.
I'm running a single Dell 2707 (1920x1200), and I'm thinking of going for a couple of Samsung 2433BW + the Dell DP adapter. I wanted 2 that also supports 1920x1200 and I don't have the desk space (nor do I want to spend that much) for 2 more Dell 27" monitors.
Now I'm just glad I didn't go for the Dell 3007, it was on sale for only a couple of hundred more dollars at the time. Two 22" - 24" monitors would be an even bigger disparity.
Anyway for anyone looking, Dell also has a P2310H (1920x1080, with DP) on sale for $209 until 10/1.

Not sure how those "Professional" series are for gaming though ?
Or get the Dell "Alienware" branded gaming monitors, for 21.5" size 1920x1080res the image would look very sharp with small pixels, super high res.

Displayport-compatible screens needed for Eyefinity?
How much price difference is there in the manufacture of a DP port vs a DP+ port? One would not think it was equal to the price of a $100 active adapter or for that matter 1/10th the price. I'm not getting the economics here as far as a card like the 6-port can't have all DP+ electrical port outs?
While you're coming at this from the larger picture and as a manufacturer, those of us here come at it from the perspective as the established surround-screen gaming community that simply doesn't have any market saturation at all of DP based products. There seems to be a lack of marketing research that was done when looking into the EyeFinity target market. You openly admit only just a few days ago even finding WSGF, which has had a focus on this type of technology for years now. I'd say almost 100% of the WSGF is DVI/HDMI based multi-display. The lack of DP+ and the adapter issue is making what would otherwise be a wonderful new tech and putting roadblocks in place for acceptance. By only using DP, ATI is passing the buck as far as user expense to all of us who will have to now go track down active adapters.
In order to gain wider acceptance I think most of us would be willing to pay a price premium for DP+ based cards. A price premium built into the card for DP+ is significantly less than hiding the cost and passing it onto the consumer via active adapter price premium.
Agree. The Eyefinity6 card must be able to support 6 single link DVI connections via simple passive adaptors. If you want dual link resolutions then you sacrifice two outputs each so you end up with 3 - the same as the current 5870.
It needs to be fully DP+ capable, able to switch each to single link DVI output.
If the 6 card is effectively gimped by the requirement to use active adaptors then the whole fuss of Eyefinity is going to fail...
And, if nVidia is watching and reading and picks up on these requirements for their next card then the current slot at the top for ATI is going to be very short again...
Dave, can you please confirm the DP+ capabilities of the Eyefinity6 card - can it run each output at single link DVI resolutions via passive adaptors...?

Displayport-compatible screens needed for Eyefinity?
I don't think anyone here is asking for ATi to do a "no extra cost" value add feature. I think what most of us are saying is that there should be some variation of the card that does away with DP and uses all DP+ that we'll happily pay the premium for over having to deal with active adapter costs. Would DP+ port not cost us less than a bunch of active adapters?
Simply put, yes, as it would require an entriely new ASIC specifically for this.
With that in mind, is the architecture capable of 6 DP+ ports on the 6 mini-dp card?
No. Again, its DP that makes this capable, and the architecture behind DP.
There is a pre-established market for EyeFinity and it's not currently properly targeting it. EyeFinity should set the bar low enough to allow it to gain acceptance and the DP requirement is an impediment to that, especially if DP+ could be used for a marginal increase in cost.
You're thinking only in terms of that market. Bear in mind that all previous graphics boards can only drive 2 displays, so most users will either have one or two panels - for them, adding Eyefinity capabilities means they need to add another display or two anyway.

Displayport-compatible screens needed for Eyefinity?
[quote]can we get a confirmation if Eyefinity works with 3 x DVI LCDs when using two of the 5870 cards ?
thanks
I think Dave already confirmed that Eyefinity across cards is currently not supported. What we are interested in is WILL it eventually be supported one day?
Just to confirm
Dear Customer,
Your service request : SR #{ticketno:[8200241870]} has been reviewed and updated.
Response and Service Request History:
You would be able to run all three displays but only as independent displays. You would not be able to use the 3 monitors connected to different video cards as a single display. This can only be done on monitors connected to the same video card.
In order to update this service request, please respond, leaving the service request reference intact.

Already posted here.
So pretty much the same problem then, if you have 3 "legacy" DVI screens, you still need 2 normal DP adapters and one $100 active DP adapter...
Thanks for clarifying.
