I have a 5970 right now. I want to get a 4gb model but I would like one that exhausts the hot air out of the case. I feel how much hot air comes out of the 5970 when gaming and I would hate to have all that heat in my case. Maybe the big heatsinks absorb some of the heat.

Not a problem for me, I have a Danger Gen Torture Rack, which is just an open box. Works great for the AC type cooling fans :)

You could also do two Eyefinity6 in CrossFireX. Not as pimp-tastic, but probably cheaper and a more flexible setup.

How cheaper?
Now with normal 1 GBers
2 x 5870s = 689x2 = 1378 stock
1 x 5870 Black Edition = 1299 factory OC'ed

It may be an issue of exchange rate in NZ or something. Assuming that the 5970 BE was USD$1299...

1GB 5870 ~$400
2GB 5870 Eyefinity6 $400-$500

Assuming high end of range, $475x2 = $950

Maybe I'm getting things crossed.

Normally a single card, 2 of, is more expensive that the same 2 GPUs on one card. Just cos you only have to pay for one of many of the bits, instead of 2. 1 box, 1PCIe piece etc. But it could be different with this particular card, I spose.

Agreed. I think that this particular BE version with the six mini-DP may get a premium price. Will just have to wait and see when it hits stores.

yeah its either 2x 5970 1gb or this 1x 5970 4gb.. definitley want to see performance numbers, cuz i know 2x 5970 in crossfire/eyefinity runs like crap right now.

this looks promising... or 2gb 5870s... seems like at 5xxx by 1xxx or higher my 1gb card gets mem starved before it runs out of gpu horse power... or at least it feels that way on my own setup with certain games... I too want to see some performance info before dropping coin on anything like this though.

remember the bus width of this card isn't being increased, it's still going to be 256bit so the whole 4gb may just be moot. Heck even with the 256bit bus the 5970 has enough problems flushing it's frame buffer as it is so I don't really see the extra mem making a great difference considering how the architecture is set up atm. Power draw through single pci-e will be outrageous with this thing anyway let alone how hot it will run in eyefinity mode. People with a 5970 already would either be loaded or crazy to upgrade to this thing.

Yep and you can sell your 5970 for the same price as you brought it new, due to price increases. So not loaded and not crazy, when the GDDR5 is running at 5000MHz the 256 bus ain't no problem. As to hot, look at the cooling, the RoG is a 3 slot cooler and the Sapphire has an AC 3 fan cooling set up. Not a problem.

xfx is making a black edition 5970 4gb card. the description of the "included" is interesting.

Accessories bundle includes:

3x MiniDP (Male) to DP (Female) adapter
1x MiniDP to HDMI Dongle
2x MiniDP to SL-DVI Dongle
1x CrossFire bridge
1x QIG Quick installation guide
1x driver CD installation guide **new driver CD format
1x Black Edition Door Hanger (Quick Access for Technical Support)
1x Exclusive Black Edition case badge
1x Black Edition sticker
1 x XFX OC TOOL

does this mean that you don't need active adapter for this card?

Heaps of EyeFinity 1GB vs 2GB 5870 reviews up, and it seems to make not a blind bit of difference at even EF res :(
