Diablo 1 was one of the earliest online games... They really did not think about cheating at all in it. You could literally use a trainer that edits memory values online, or edit your local save game that is used online. Mistakes were made, Things were learned.

I don't understand the "it's no wonder..." part. Who were you replying to?

I was replying to your statement about bnet security (sorry for not being clear on that front)

and the reasons for diablo1 online failure don't really matter, the fact is it happened and probably made blizzard very self-conscious about internet hacking/cheating
after all as a diablo1 player I can state that I was pretty disappointed by the fact that people logged in, killed people without even being around and stole inventories
